Felix Auger-Aliassime wins 2023 Swiss Indoors
October 31, 2023

Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec has defended his title at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland. After winning the 2022 Swiss Indoors over Holger Rune of Denmark, Auger-Aliassime defeated the fourth seed, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in Sunday’s final, 7-6, 7-6. In the first set tiebreak, Auger-Aliassime won 7-3, and in the second set tiebreak, Auger-Aliassime won 7-5.
Auger-Aliassime just seemed to be serving better than Hurkacz throughout the match, as the Polish player was dealing with a left leg injury. Auger-Aliassime won 93% of points on his first serve, and 79% of points on his second serve. Hurkacz did not have a break point opportunity throughout the entire match.
While Auger-Aliassime had an outstanding 2022 tennis season as he was named the Lionel Conacher Award winner and won four ATP tournaments, it has been a struggle for him in 2023. In fact Auger-Aliassime went through a 15 match stretch earlier this year, where he only won two matches.
In the Swiss Indoor this past week, Auger-Aliassime got a bit of a break, as Hurkacz was not only dealing with a leg ailment, but Rune (Auger-Aliassime’s semifinal opponent) also appeared not to be feeling too well. Both Hurkacz and Rune were struggling significantly with Auger-Aliassime’s serve.
Rune made headlines a couple of times this week. In the quarterfinals against Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, Rune was called Casper instead of Holger by chair umpire Damien Dumusois of France according to tennis.com. Casper Ruud of Norway is currently eighth in the world. Also, Rune’s current coach Boris Becker of Germany, has asked him to stop wearing caps and bracelets while on the court.
