Major League Baseball history was made on Friday night. Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar of Maracay, Venezuela had a memorable game for the ages. Tovar became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit two home runs (with one home run being a walk-off home run) and steal home plate in the same game according to Benjamin Adducchio of Clutch Sports.
Tovar’s first home run was a two-run shot in the eighth inning. He then hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning to break a 6-6 deadlock and close out the scoring.
Overall, it has been a bit of a disappointing season for Tovar. He is only batting .221 with 44 hits in 199 at bats. Remember two years ago, Tovar led the National League with 45 doubles.
However, Tovar was not the only Major League Baseball player to hit a walk-off home run on Friday night. In all, there were four players to accomplish the feat. The other three were Bryan Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates (in a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins), Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox (in a 4-3 Chicago win over the Detroit Tigers), and MJ Melendez of the New York Mets (in a 9-7 New York win over the Miami Marlins).
Despite the win, the Rockies continue to struggle preventing runs from being scored. On Sunday, the Rockies allowed 19 runs in a 19-6 Giants victory. On the season, the Rockies have given up 334 runs. That is the most runs allowed in the Major Leagues. In the offseason, the Rockies hired Josh Byrnes as their new general manager. At 22 wins and 38 losses, the Rockies are the worst team in all of baseball.
