Emma Raducanu honoured in Great Britain with the MBE

According to Emily Burack of the Town and Country Magazine on Tuesday, 2021 United States Open champion Emma Raducanu of Bromley, England has received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (also known as MBE). Raducanu received the honour directly from King Charles at Windsor Castle.

The reason for the recognition is because of Raducanu’s services to tennis. Her 2021 United States Open championship title was significant because she was the first ever qualifier to win a women’s grand slam singles tennis tournament. In the final, Raducanu defeated Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada, 6-4, 6-3.

The 2022 United States Open is the only WTA event that Raducanu has won to date. Since her claim to fame at Flushing Meadows, New York, it has been a  struggle for Raducanu. She has dropped 65 places in the world rankings from 10th in the world to 75th in the world, in only a matter of four months. It should be noted that the world rankings are a little strange and bizarre because when Raducanu entered the 2022 United States Open as a qualifier, she was 150th in the world.

There is no doubt that since Raducanu has won her grand slam title, she has been under constant scrutiny. In December of 2021, Raducanu tested positive for coronavirus. This year she has been touted “the one-slam wonder” by the British press for not advancing to one WTA Final in 2022. Raducanu’s best result was reaching the semifinals of the Korea Open, where she had to retire from her match against 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia because of a glute muscle injury according to Mike Dickson of the Daily Mail.
