Dion Prestia has joined Hawthorn as an AFL development coach for 2027, beginning his coaching career just months after the three-time Richmond premiership star retired from playing.
Hawthorn confirmed the appointment in a club statement on Friday 16 October, adding Prestia to its coaching line-up for next season.
The 254-game midfielder hung up the boots in August after 16 seasons with Gold Coast and Richmond.
Hawthorn executive general manager of football Rob McCartney welcomed the move. “We welcome Dion to the brown and gold and congratulate him on his appointment as our newest AFL Development Coach,” McCartney said.
“Across his 16-year playing career, Dion was widely respected as a player who demonstrated discipline, toughness and competitiveness – all characteristics that we believe will make our environment better as he begins his coaching journey.”
McCartney said Prestia’s recent playing experience would help him connect with the Hawks’ list. “As a three-time premiership player fresh out of the game, Dion brings a great understanding as to the current demands of the game and a level of relatability that our players can connect with.”

From inaugural Sun to Richmond great
Prestia was one of Gold Coast’s inaugural players and served as the Suns’ vice-captain for several seasons before crossing to Richmond.
At Punt Road he played a key role in the Tigers’ 2017, 2019 and 2020 premierships, and he won the Jack Dyer Medal as Richmond’s best and fairest in the 2019 premiership year.

Coaching ahead of another playing stint
Prestia had left the door slightly open to playing on at another club after announcing his retirement, telling SEN: “I don’t know if it’s completely a retirement”, AFL.com.au reported. He has now chosen to start his coaching career instead.
Clubs are finalising their coaching panels for 2027, with AFL.com.au also reporting that Sydney has appointed former Gold Coast player Andrew Boston as a development coach.
