Day 6 Olympic Recap–two impressive Aussie gold medals
July 30, 2021
After six days of the 2020 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Australians have met expectations and maybe even exceeded them. On Thursday, Australia won two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal for four medals. In the overall standings, Australia now has 20 total medals. That puts them fifth in the overall medal standings behind the United States (38), China (31), the Russian Olympic Committee (28), and Japan (25).
In a terrific Australian sports story, Jessica Fox of Penrith, New South Wales, is finally an Olympic gold medallist. In the last three Olympic Games, Fox had reached the podium in the kayak slalom, but was never on the top step of the podium. After not winning gold in Tokyo, Fox stated it “wasn’t meant to be.”
In the Olympic women’s canoe slalom competition, which made its debut at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, a gold medal for Fox was meant to be. She posted a clear time of 105.04 seconds. Mallory Franklin of Great Britain won the silver medal with a time of 108.68 seconds. Andrea Herzog of Germany won bronze with a time of 111.3 seconds.
Australia came through with a gold in men’s swimming too. In the men’s 200m breaststroke, Zac Stubblety-Cook posted a winning time of 2:06.38. Aho Kamminga of the Netherlands was in second place with a time of 2:07.01. Matti Mattsson of Finland won the bronze with a time of 2:07.13.
Australia’s other two medals also came in swimming. In the men’s 100 metre freestyle, Kyle Chalmers of Port Lincoln had a time of 47.08 in winning silver. Caeleb Dressel of the United States won gold with a time of 47.02 in an Olympic record time. Kliment Kolesnikov of the Russian Olympic Committee had a time of 47.44 in winning bronze. Meanwhile, Australia needed to battle Canada to reach the podium in the women’s 4x200m relay. Australia came through with a time of 7:41.29. China won gold in a world record time of 7:40.33 in winning gold and the United States won silver with a time of 7:40.73.
