Team Australia came through with a silver and bronze medal on Monday at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Andrew Hoy of Culcairn, Kevin McNab of Cairns, and Shane Rose of Sydney placed second in the team eventing competition, while Hoy won the bronze medal in the individual eventing portion of the Olympic Games.
In the process, Hoy made Olympic history by becoming the oldest Australian Olympic medalist all-time at age 62. Hoy broke the record previously set by Bill Roycroft of Melbourne, who won the bronze medal in the team eventing competition at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal at age 61.
In the individual eventing competition, Australia placed behind gold medalist Julia Krajewski of Germany, and silver medalist Tom McEwen of Great Britain. In the team eventing, Great Britain won gold and France won bronze.
This was McNab’s first career medal in eventing. Hoy meanwhile, has become one of the finest equestrian riders of all-time. He now has six total Olympic medals in either individual or team eventing. Hoy won the gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, along with a silver medal in individual eventing at the 2000 Olympic Games. Rose meanwhile was on the Australian team that won Olympic silver at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and then Olympic bronze in team eventing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
In other Olympic action, Australia has reached the quarterfinals in women’s basketball following a 96-69 win over Puerto Rico. They will also play the United States for bronze in women’s football following a 1-0 loss to Sweden in the semifinal.
