The National Basketball Association had its draft lottery on Monday, and it was won by the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks were victorious in the lottery despite only having a 1.8% chance of getting the number one pick.
It was a disappointing season for the Mavericks. They missed the playoffs with a record of 39 wins and 43 losses. Dallas made the NBA Play-In Tournament, but lost 120-106 to the Memphis Grizzlies in the game that was to determine who the eighth seed would be.
The Mavericks made NBA headlines in February when they shockingly traded the face of their franchise, Luka Doncic of Ljubljana, Slovenia, to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. The transaction was considered very unpopular among the Mavericks fan base.
The fact that the Mavericks will get the number one pick of the 2025 NBA Draft when they went to the 2024 NBA Finals is also stunning. Dallas was only three wins away from winning the 2024 NBA Finals before losing to the Boston Celtics a year ago.
In the 2024 NBA regular season, Dallas had a record of 50 wins and 32 losses for a winning percentage of .610. They had 11 fewer losses this season than last, and as a result they will get to choose the first college basketball prospect in the draft.
The feeling at this time who the first overall pick will be is Cooper Flagg of Newport, Maine. The 18 year old can play shooting guard and small forward, and was the 2025 National College Player of the Year after a productive season with Duke University.
