For the second straight year, Coco Gauff of Atlanta, Georgia has won a WTA 1000 series event in China. After beating Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-3 in the final of the 2024 China Open in Beijing, Gauff defeated fellow American Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the 2025 Wuhan Open. Gauff was the third seed, while Pegula was the sixth seed.
Gauff had the edge when it came to some serving statistics. Gauff had a first serve percentage of 74%, while Pegula had a first serve percentage of 50%. Gauff also won 64% of her points on her second serve. Pegula only won 34% of her points on her second serve. That 30% difference was actually dramatic. Gauff also broke Pegula six times in eight opportunities.
Pegula was one of two seeded players Gauff defeated in Shanghai. In the semifinals, Gauff defeated the seventh seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy, 6-4, 6-3.
This was the second title Gauff has won in women’s tennis this year. She also beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the 2025 French Open. That was Gauff’s second grand slam title. She also beat Sabalenka in the final of the 2023 United States Open by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
This was the seventh time Gauff has played Pegula. Interestingly, this was the first time they have ever played each other in a final. Pegula has won four of seven meetings. Gauff’s other two wins over Pegula came in the quarterfinals of Eastbourne in 2023 (6-3, 6-3), and in the round robin of the 2024 WTA Finals in Riyadh, 6-3, 6-2.
