According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports on Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs have found a backup to their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. They signed Carson Wentz of Raleigh, North Carolina to a one-year contract.
The Chiefs will be the fifth National Football League team Wentz has played for. He was previously with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016 to 2020, the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, the Washington Commanders in 2022, and the Los Angeles Rams in 2023.
Wentz spent the 2023 season as a backup to Matt Stafford in Los Angeles. He won his only start. That came in a 21-20 Rams win over the San Francisco 49ers on January 7. Wentz completed 17 of 24 passes for 163 passing yards, two touchdown passes and one interception. He also had 17 rushes for 56 yards and another major score. Wentz threw touchdown passes to Puka Nacua of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Tyler Johnson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The touchdown pass to Nacua was for 19 yards and the touchdown pass to Johnson was for eight yards. Wentz then had a key 12-yard touchdown run with four minutes and 56 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and then had a game-winning two-point conversion to Tutu Atwell of Miami, Florida.
Wentz was a Super Bowl champion with the Eagles in 2018. However, his season ended early as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in week 14 on December 10, in a 43-35 Eagles win over the Los Angeles Rams. That season Wentz was selected to the Pro Bowl. He completed 265 passes in 440 attempts, for 3296 passing yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Wentz had 64 rushes for 299 rushing yards.
