Chiefs sign DeAndre Washington from the Raiders
April 10, 2020
The Kansas City Chiefs signed running back DeAndre Washington of Houston, Texas to a one year contract according to ESPN on Wednesday. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed. Washington joins his second National Football League franchise as he was in the backfield for the Oakland Raiders over the last four seasons from 2016 to 2019.
Last season while playing for the Raiders in their last season in Oakland before moving to Las Vegas in 2020, Washington had 108 rushes for 387 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 36 catches for 292 yards. Washington was used primarily as a backup running back for Oakland to Josh Jacobs of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who led the team with 1150 yards rushing.
Washington’s most notable performance last season came on December 22. In giving Raiders fans an early Christmas present, he rushed 23 times for a career high 85 yards in a 24-17 Raiders win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Through his career, Washington has 282 carries for 1122 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He also had 88 catches for 613 yards and one touchdown.
Now in Kansas City, expect Washington to be in the backup role again. This time, he is expected to be the backup to Damien Williams of San Diego, California. However it should be noted that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid did not use Williams exclusively as a number one running back in 2019. Williams led the Chiefs in carries with 111, but LeSean McCoy also had 101 carries. McCoy is currently a free agent, while Chiefs backup running back Darrel Williams ended his 2019 season in December because of a torn hamstring.
