Caulfield Cup winners stretch from Newminster in 1879 to Kingswood in 2026, with Bart Cummings the most successful trainer and Scobie Breasley the most successful jockey. Here is every winner of Caulfield’s famous 2400m handicap, with the jockeys and trainers since 1988, plus the race records and the Melbourne Cup double.
Kingswood is the newest name on the honour roll. The British-bred grey won the 150th Caulfield Cup on Saturday 17 October 2026, flying down the outside from barrier 20 under John Allen to beat Saint George by half a length, with English raider Enfjaar a length away in third. It was a first Caulfield Cup for both Allen and Cranbourne trainer Gavin Bedggood, and Racing Australia’s race history has him running the 2400m in 2:28.21 for prize money of $6.545 million.
The day was overshadowed by a fall at the top of the straight. Defending champion Half Yours, the 2025 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups winner, clipped heels and Ohope Wins fell over him. Half Yours escaped serious injury and was sent for a spell, but Ohope Wins was euthanised on course.
The Caulfield Cup has long been the key lead-up to the Melbourne Cup, run 17 days later, and its winner earns a ballot exemption for the Flemington race. Kingswood was not nominated for the 2026 Melbourne Cup and is being set for the Hong Kong Vase in December instead. Caulfield Cup third placegetter Enfjaar, sixth-placed Zahrann and Middle Earth (ninth) were all drawn in the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field for Tuesday 3 November.

The Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double
Thirteen horses have won both Cups in the same spring: Poseidon (1906), The Trump (1937), Rivette (1939), Rising Fast (1954), Even Stevens (1962), Galilee (1966), Gurner’s Lane (1982), Let’s Elope (1991), Doriemus (1995), Might And Power (1997), Ethereal (2001), Without A Fight (2023) and Half Yours (2025). Four horses have won the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate in the same year: Tranquil Star (1942), Rising Fast (1954), Tobin Bronze (1967) and Northerly (2002). Rising Fast is the only horse to win all three in one spring. Our Cox Plate winners list covers that race in full.
Overseas-trained Caulfield Cup winners
Horses trained outside Australia and New Zealand have been running in the race since 1998, and six have won it. Taufan’s Melody struck first for Lady Herries in 1998, Godolphin’s Saeed bin Suroor won with All The Good (2008) and Best Solution (2018), France’s Mikel Delzangles won with Dunaden (2012), and Japan has won twice, with Admire Rakti (2014) and Mer De Glace (2019).
Famous Caulfield Cup moments
The 1885 Cup brought the worst fall in Australian racing history. Fifteen of the 44 runners fell as the field turned for home, and jockey Donald Nicolson was killed. During World War II the race was moved to Flemington, and in 1943 it was run in two divisions, won by Saint Warden and Skipton. In 1978, most of the crowd at Caulfield thought Arwon had beaten Taksan, but The Age recalled that Taksan was declared the winner by a short half-head. The 1909 Cup ended in a dead heat between Blue Book and Aborigine.
Each winner below is listed newest first. From 1988 the jockey is shown first, then the trainer. Dual winners and Melbourne Cup or Cox Plate doubles are marked.
