Oklahoma City Thunder guard Cason Wallace has agreed to a five-year, US$139 million rookie-scale contract extension, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Sunday (US time).
Charania reported the deal one day before the NBA’s deadline for rookie-scale extensions, locking in one of the league’s best young defenders as the Thunder chase another championship.
The Thunder had already exercised Wallace’s US$7.4 million club option for the 2026-27 season in October 2025, which meant he was not due to become a restricted free agent until next off-season, Bleacher Report noted. The extension gives both sides long-term certainty.
An elite perimeter defender
Wallace was named to the All-Defensive Second Team last season and finished seventh in Defensive Player of the Year voting, while averaging a career-high 8.6 points per game. Hoops Rumors reported that he led the NBA in total steals and deflections.

The former Kentucky guard averaged 6.8 points a game as a rookie in 2023-24, mostly off the bench. In his second season he played 68 regular-season games, 43 of them as a starter, averaging 8.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals as Oklahoma City won the 2025 NBA championship.
Starting role in sight
Hoops Rumors reported that Wallace is likely to take over the starting shooting guard spot left open when the Thunder traded Luguentz Dort to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal in July.
Oklahoma City finished last season with the NBA’s best record at 64-18 but lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, with Wallace averaging 10.1 points a game in that series, according to Bleacher Report.
The Thunder now have all five starters on multi-year deals, and Spotrac’s Keith Smith noted they are likely to face a large luxury tax bill next summer, Hoops Rumors reported.
