Payton Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, US$44.2 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Tuesday (US time).
The deal is fully guaranteed and includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 season, Pritchard’s agents at CAA, Austin Brown and Max Saidman, told ESPN. Charania described it as a two-year max extension.
The mutual option allows either side to opt in for the final season of the contract in 2029-30, which also opens the window for further extension talks that summer, ESPN reported.
ClutchPoints reported the new deal will not kick in until the 2028-29 season, with the 28-year-old guard still under the four-year, US$30 million extension he signed with Boston in 2023.
Career-best season
Pritchard, a 2024 NBA champion and the 2025 Sixth Man of the Year, averaged career highs of 17 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds last season. He started 50 games as the Celtics coped without Jayson Tatum for most of the campaign, according to ESPN.

ESPN Research found his touches per game rose from 51.8 in 2024-25 to nearly 70 last season, the second-largest jump among the 33 players with at least 4,000 touches in both seasons.
He is one of four players in Celtics history to make at least 200 three-pointers in multiple seasons, alongside Tatum, Derrick White and Antoine Walker. His 241 games over the past three seasons are tied for the third-most in the NBA in that span.
What it means for Boston
The extension keeps a durable, proven scorer in the retooled Celtics’ backcourt for the long term. ClutchPoints noted Pritchard was Boston’s second-leading scorer behind Jaylen Brown last season before Tatum returned from his Achilles injury, as the Celtics won 56 games and finished second in the Eastern Conference.
