According to Donnie Druin of Sports Illustrated on Wednesday, the Arizona Cardinals claimed running back Michael Carter off waivers from the New York Jets. The native of Navarre, Florida was not getting much playing time with the Jets as he was behind Breece Hall of Omaha, Nebraska and Dalvin Cook of Miami, Florida on the Jets depth chart.
This season Carter only had eight rushes for 38 rushing yards and 15 catches for 68 receiving yards. In 2021 and 2022, Carter had significant more playing time. In 2021, he had 147 rushing attempts for 639 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, along with 36 catches for 325 receiving yards. Carter was the top rookie in week four of the 2021 NFL season. In 2022, he had 114 rushing attempts for 402 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns, along with 41 catches for 288 receiving yards.
Carter was the Jets’s fourth round pick, 107th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft. He played his college football at North Carolina. In his rookie season, Carter had one of his most memorable NFL games of his career, as he had 16 rushes for 118 rushing yards and two catches for six yards in a 26-21 Jets win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Boxing Day, 2021.
In Arizona, the Cardinals were in need to bolster their offense after only winning two of their top 10 games. They do have quarterback Kyler Murray of Bedford, Texas back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and Murray was instrumental in guiding the Cardinals to 25-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. At this time, Carter is behind James Conner of Erie, Pennsylvania on Arizona’s depth chart.
