The Atlanta Braves have named Walt Weiss of Tuxedo, New York as their new manager according to Mark Bowman of mlb.com on Monday. This is Weiss’s second managerial job as he spent four seasons managing the Colorado Rockies from 2013 to 2016. While with the Rockies, he had a record of 283 wins and 365 losses for a winning percentage of .437.
Over the last eight seasons, Weiss has been a bench coach for the Braves. He was part of the Braves organization that won the 2021 World Series.
Weiss takes over from Brian Snitker, who was reassigned within the organization at the end of the regular season. He had been the Braves manager since 2016.
It is interesting that the Braves are hiring internally for the managerial position. Atlanta was 10 games below the .500 mark a year ago, but are expected to be better in 2026, and having a healthy Ronald Acuna Jr. should help. Acuna Jr. did not play the first seven weeks of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered during the 2024 MLB season.
As a Major League Baseball player, Weiss played 14 seasons as a shortstop from 1987 to 2000. He was with the Oakland Athletics from 1987 to 1992, the Florida Marlins in 1993, the Colorado Rockies from 1994 to 1997, and the Atlanta Braves from 1998 to 2000. It is interesting that Weiss is about to play for and manage with two different organizations.
Among Weiss’s accomplishments as a player included winning the 1988 American League Rookie of the Year with the Athletics and being an All-Star with the Braves in 1998 Weiss was a National League All-Star despite the fact he had zero home runs.
