Bologna to host the Davis Cup Finals through to 2027
December 3, 2024
According to the Associated Press on Monday, the Davis Cup Finals are being moved from Malaga, Spain to Bologna, Italy. The top world team tennis tournament will be in Italy over the next three years through to 2027. This is the first time the Davis Cup Finals has changed countries since the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals were allocated to one location in 2019. The 2019 and 2021 Davis Cup Finals were in Madrid, while the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Davis Cup Finals were in Malaga.
Italy has had great success at the Davis Cup in recent years. They were victorious in 2023 over Australia in the final, and then over the Netherlands in 2024.
There is the anticipation among Italians that world number one Jannik Sinner will be representing Italy at the Davis Cup over the next three years, but it is far from a slam dunk. That is primarily because of the possibility that Sinner could receive a significant suspension for a banned substance that entered his body in the early stages of 2024. Sinner initially lost his points and did not receive his winnings from the Indian Wells Masters 1000 series event in March. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (better known as WADA) believed the sanctions against Sinner were too lenient, and is pushing for a suspension.
Sinner won two major singles titles in 2024. He was victorious at the Australian Open and United States Open.
There are nine Italian men currently ranked in the top 100. Joining Sinner of Innichen, the other eight are world 17 and 2024 Wimbledon semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti of Carrara, world number 32 Flavio Cobolli of Florence, world number 34 and 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini of Rome, world number 37 Matteo Arnaldi of Sanremo, world number 44 Luciano Darderi, world number 53 Lorenzo Sonego of Turin, world number 91 Fabio Fognini of Sanremo and world number 92 Luca Nardi of Pesaro.
The Davis Cup in 2026 will be one of two major sporting events in Italy that year. The 2026 Olympic Winter Games are in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
