Stradbroke Star Spicy Martini Eyes Everest Dream After Brisbane Triumph

Fresh off her dominant Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap victory, Spicy Martini could be set for an even bigger stage, with connections already plotting a path towards the $20 million Everest at Randwick in October.

The Toby Edmonds-trained mare was one of the stories of the Brisbane Winter Carnival after storming to victory in Saturday’s $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), and her connections are now daring to dream about a tilt at the world’s richest turf race.

Edmonds confirmed on Radio TAB’s Past The Post program that Spicy Martini will bypass the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara later this month, with all attention turning towards securing an Everest slot.

The veteran Gold Coast trainer believes his star mare deserves her chance against Australia’s sprinting elite.

“Hopefully this mare might attract an Everest slot, we’ll see what happens,” Edmonds said.

The 60-year-old trainer also drew inspiration from legendary Randwick horseman Les Bridge, who famously prepared Classique Legend to win The Everest in 2020.

“Les Bridge is into his eighties and he’s still training well and training Everest winners,” Edmonds said.

While an Everest campaign may have seemed ambitious only a few months ago, Spicy Martini’s latest performance suggests she belongs in the conversation.

Her Stradbroke victory was both authoritative and lucrative, adding $1.8 million to her bankroll and taking her career earnings beyond $2.7 million.

The result also continues one of racing’s great bargain-buy stories.

Purchased for just $8,000, Spicy Martini has already provided a remarkable return on investment for her owners, but her value soared even higher on Saturday.

In a move that now looks inspired, connections withdrew the mare from last month’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale in Sydney, opting to continue her racing career rather than cash in on her broodmare credentials.

That decision has paid immediate dividends.

With a Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap now on her resume and a potential Everest campaign on the horizon, Spicy Martini’s broodmare value has skyrocketed, giving connections every reason to chase further riches before she eventually heads to the breeding barn.

For now, the Winter Carnival heroine remains in work, and if her Stradbroke performance was any indication, Australia’s sprinting ranks may not have seen the best of her just yet.
