Can Angel Capital transform a Group 2 campaign launch into the victory that defines his racing—and breeding—career?
Champion trainer Chris Waller believes the talented entire is capable of finally breaking through at the elite level, with Saturday’s Missile Stakes at Randwick designed to have him ready for a decisive Group 1 assignment second-up.
Missile Stakes launches Group 1 mission
Angel Capital will begin his spring campaign in the $300,000 Group 2 Missile Stakes over 1200 metres at Randwick.
The five-year-old has drawn barrier three and will carry 57.5kg under the set-weights-and-penalties conditions, with champion jockey James McDonald booked to ride.
Angel Capital is expected to start among the leading chances in a compact but competitive field featuring Ninja, Napoleonic and the race-fit Midnight Dynamite.
The race is more than an opportunity to secure another valuable Group victory. It has been deliberately positioned to prepare Angel Capital for a Group 1 contest over 1400 metres at his following start.
Speaking exclusively to Racenet about Angel Capital’s campaign and stud future, Waller expressed confidence in the horse’s condition.
“He’s come back well. Mentally he’s great,” Waller told Racenet.
Waller believes Angel Capital needs a demanding first-up run to reach his peak at his next appearance, describing him as a horse who must be “rock-hard fit second-up.”
The trainer’s verdict was emphatic: “He could win a Group One.”
Memsie and Winx Stakes under consideration
Angel Capital’s second start is likely to come in either the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield or the Group 1 Winx Stakes at Randwick.
Both races are contested over 1400 metres at weight-for-age, a combination Waller believes will suit Angel Capital once he has the benefit of his Missile Stakes run.
The Winx Stakes would allow him to remain in Sydney and compete over the Randwick course where he finished sixth in the All Aged Stakes at his most recent appearance.
The Memsie Stakes would require another trip to Melbourne but could present a suitable opportunity for a horse already proven around Caulfield.
Waller is yet to lock in the final destination, with Angel Capital’s Missile Stakes performance and recovery likely to determine which path is selected.
Whichever race the stable chooses, the objective is unmistakable. Angel Capital must convert his consistent elite-level performances into a maiden Group 1 victory.
One missing box on valuable résumé
Angel Capital has already compiled an impressive record of five wins and three placings from 15 starts, earning more than $2.26 million in prize money.
The son of Harry Angel is a multiple Group winner and was placed three times at Group 1 level during the 2025-26 racing season.
His strongest autumn performance came when finishing second to Jigsaw in the William Reid Stakes at Caulfield. He subsequently ended his preparation with a sixth placing behind Beiwacht in the All Aged Stakes, finishing only 2.5 lengths from the winner.
Angel Capital has proven particularly effective when fresh, winning four of his five first-up appearances. That record strengthens his prospects in the Missile, although Waller’s broader focus is ensuring the horse improves into his second start.
The major omission from Angel Capital’s résumé remains a Group 1 victory.
For most racehorses, that breakthrough would primarily represent prestige and prize money. For an entire owned by breeding powerhouse Yulong Investments, it could determine the value and timing of his future stud career.
Group 1 victory could transform stud value
Angel Capital is by Harry Angel, the champion European sprinter who has become an increasingly influential stallion in Australia.
His dam, Bahamas, is a daughter of successful sire Teofilo, giving Angel Capital a commercially attractive pedigree to complement his racetrack performances.
A Group 1 victory would add the final—and most valuable—piece to that profile.
Elite-level winners can command substantially greater interest from breeders, particularly when they possess speed, an appealing pedigree and strong physical attributes. Angel Capital already has the Group-race record and prize money; he now needs the top-level success that would distinguish him from other stallion prospects.
That explains why Waller and Yulong are beginning his campaign early. The Missile Stakes provides a 1200-metre starting point before Angel Capital moves to his preferred Group 1 opportunity with match fitness behind him.
It is a calculated approach designed around one result rather than an entire spring calendar.
Waller chasing first Missile Stakes win
A victory would also give Waller a rare addition to his remarkable training record.
Despite dominating Australian racing and winning virtually every major event on the calendar, Waller is yet to train a Missile Stakes winner. He has had only a small number of runners in the race throughout his career compared with other early-season features.
Angel Capital appears well placed to change that.
The race conditions give him an opportunity to use his class and natural speed without immediately confronting the weight-for-age opposition awaiting him later in the month.
Winning the Missile would strengthen confidence in the campaign, but Waller’s comments make it clear that Saturday is the beginning rather than the destination.
Angel Capital does not need another respectable Group 1 performance. He needs to win one.
The Missile Stakes will determine whether he is ready to finally secure that breakthrough—and potentially book his future place on Yulong’s stallion roster.
