Presidents Cup: USA Completes Epic Singles Comeback to Beat Internationals 17-13

- The Sporting Base Presidents Cup: USA Completes Epic Singles Comeback to Beat Internationals 17-13 Image
The United States completed a remarkable Presidents Cup comeback at Medinah, overturning a three-point overnight deficit to beat Geoff Ogilvy’s International Team 17-13, with American rookie Jacob Bridgeman sealing the Cup 1-up against Australia’s Min Woo Lee. The Internationals had led 10.5-7.5 into Sunday singles — their first lead on US soil into the final day — but were overrun as the Americans won the session 9.5-2.5. Adam Scott lost 2 and 1 to Patrick Cantlay, ending a near-miss bid for Australia’s first Presidents Cup win since 1998.

How the Cup slipped away

Ogilvy’s side needed five points from the 12 singles matches after carrying a historic lead into the final day. Instead they managed only 2.5, according to the PGA Tour’s Sunday recap and the ESPN final leaderboard.

Tom Kim (3 and 2 over Wyndham Clark) and Sungjae Im (3 and 1 over Sam Burns) delivered the Internationals’ only outright singles wins. Nick Taylor halved with Russell Henley for the other half-point. Everything else went red for Brandt Snedeker’s Americans.

Cameron Young opened with a 3-and-2 win over Ryo Hisatsune. Justin Thomas thumped Corey Conners 5 and 3. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler beat Nico Echavarria 2 and 1, Collin Morikawa edged Hideki Matsuyama 1-up, and Chris Gotterup held off Christiaan Bezuidenhout 1-up. Patrick Cantlay then closed out Scott 2 and 1 after holing a long birdie on the 16th, and Jackson Koivun beat Si Woo Kim 2-up to push the United States to 14.5.

Bridgeman clinches against Lee

With the Cup on the line, Bridgeman — still looking for his first point of the week after two foursomes losses — beat Lee 1-up on the 18th. The PGA Tour reported Lee’s bogey opened the door and Bridgeman made him pay, taking the United States to 15.5 and clinching an 11th straight Presidents Cup win. Xander Schauffele later finished Ryan Fox 2 and 1 to make the final score 17-13.

Lee finished the week with two wins, a half and two losses. Both of his wins came alongside New Zealand’s Fox in foursomes. Scott, playing a record-extending 12th Presidents Cup, finished with one win and three losses for the week after Friday’s foursomes heroics with Bezuidenhout.

What it means

The Internationals have now beaten the United States only once since the event began in 1994 — at Royal Melbourne in 1998 — and they have never won on American soil. A 15-15 tie would have shared the Cup; instead the Americans’ 9.5-2.5 singles blitz turned a three-point deficit into a four-point win.

For Australian fans who woke up to a genuine sniff of history, it was another Sunday reminder of how hard this trophy is to finish. Ogilvy’s team had done the hard work across Friday and Saturday. The singles, once again, belonged to the United States.
