Opinion: Future of LIV continues to be questioned after Michigan cancellation

Three weeks ago we reported Martin Kaymer’s opinion that the final LIV event of 2026 in Michigan would be cancelled. On Monday, we found that Kaymer’s opinion was correct according to Kurt Badenhausen of Sportico.

The LIV’s decision to cancel the Team Championship in Detroit next weekend is notable when you consider how much money was involved. The total purse was $40 million, and it was to be the highest team purse on the LIV Tour in 2026. As a result, the final LIV event in 2026 will be this weekend in Indianapolis. The individual purse is $10 million and the team purse is $30 million.

The bottom line is the fact that the LIV is running into financial issues. There were rumours that the LIV had a new investor for the new 2027 golf season. However, the rumoured investor, Ted Goldthorpe of BC Partners, has not officially been named, and now there are LIV concerns that superstars Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm want out.

The cancellation of Michigan does not look goof at all for the LIV Tour from a publicity standpoint. A key part of the LIV Tour has been the team competition, and not to have a team championship at all, puts the future of the tour in absolute doubt.

Now the questions if there will be a 2027 LIV season at all are true and legitimate. LIV Commissioner Scott O’Neil is now suggesting a possible new business model where the players could own the league itself. Why would they have to do this if there is a new investor? In the meantime, the LIV is facing multiple lawsuits and dealing with unpaid invoices according to ESPN.
