Opinion: Cavs remain interested in Harden despite legal troubles

One of the bigger NBA related stories over the weekend came in Texas, as NBA star James Harden was charged with unlawfully carrying a gun in a motor vehicle according to Teddy Ricketson of Yahoo! Sports. We also know at this time that Harden was pulled over for a traffic violation in Houston, and the gun was not in a holster according to TMZ.

Harden played this past season with the Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 23.6 points per game, eight assists per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, and 1.1 steals per game. Harden also had a field goal percentage of .434, three point percentage of .375 and free throw percentage of .884.

There is no question in his prime that Harden was one of the best players on the basketball court. While with the Houston Rockets from 2013 to 2020, he was an All-Star for eight consecutive seasons, and led the NBA in scoring three consecutive years.

Now that Harden is 36 years old, and will be 37 when the 2026-27 NBA regular season kicks off in the fall, one may wonder who will sign him after these legal issues. Well it appears that the Cavaliers are still very interested in Harden despite the recent events. According to Jason Burgos of Yahoo! Sports, Harden has a $42.3 million player option next season, but he is expected to opt out of his existing contract, and sign a three-year deal worth $90 million, which will keep him in Cleveland for the foreseeable future.
