NRL: Blaize Talagi’s Panthers Future Under Spotlight After Ivan Cleary’s Selection Call

Blaize Talagi’s long-term future at the Penrith Panthers has come under renewed scrutiny after the talented five-eighth was dropped for this week’s clash against the Canberra Raiders.

Ivan Cleary has recalled Jack Cogger to partner Nathan Cleary in the halves, with Talagi’s defensive performances becoming a growing talking point as Penrith prepares for another finals campaign.

Defensive Concerns Prompt Panthers Shake-Up

Talagi has been named in Penrith’s extended squad but will not start after the Panthers made the decision to restore Cogger to the No.6 jersey.

The move follows last week’s win over Parramatta, where the Eels repeatedly targeted Penrith’s left-edge defence. Talagi’s defensive positioning came under the microscope after Jack Williams crossed for a try following uncertainty on the Panthers’ edge.

Former Panthers coach Phil Gould believes opposition teams have identified the young playmaker as an area to attack.

Speaking on Six Tackles With Gus, Gould said Talagi’s defence had become the side’s most obvious weakness, suggesting repeated targeting may also be affecting his confidence with the ball.

Finals Spot Now in Doubt

The selection of Cogger has sparked debate over whether Talagi can force his way back into Penrith’s strongest side before the finals.

On NRL 360, CODE Sports reporter Brent Read said Talagi’s defensive numbers had become difficult to ignore but expected the 21-year-old to earn another opportunity before the playoffs.

However, fellow journalist Michael Carayannis was less convinced, arguing the Panthers may be reluctant to reintroduce a defensive weakness if Cogger performs well over the coming weeks.

Contract Situation Adds Another Twist

Talagi’s omission has also reignited discussion about his long-term future at Penrith.

The former Parramatta Eels playmaker is among a large group of Panthers players who come off contract at the end of the 2027 season. With Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Brian To’o, Liam Martin, Isaiah Papali’i, Paul Alamoti and several other key players also requiring new deals, salary cap pressure could force difficult decisions over the next 12 months.

Braith Anasta suggested Talagi could become the “fall guy” as Penrith attempts to retain its established stars, while Brent Read identified Parramatta as a logical destination should the young five-eighth eventually test the open market. At this stage, however, there has been no indication Talagi intends to leave the Panthers.

Panthers Focused on Another Premiership Push

Despite the speculation surrounding Talagi, Penrith remains firmly in the hunt for the minor premiership and another deep finals run.

The Panthers will host the Raiders in Mudgee this weekend, with Cogger now handed the opportunity to strengthen his claim for the No.6 jersey as the business end of the season approaches.
