Could Kevin Durant return to the Golden State Warriors? It might sound unlikely, but a new report suggests the Warriors haven’t completely abandoned the idea of reuniting Stephen Curry with his former teammate if the opportunity presents itself.
After missing out on LeBron James during free agency and enduring a quiet offseason, Golden State is reportedly keeping a close eye on Durant’s situation with the Houston Rockets ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Warriors Still Interested in Durant Return
According to ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel, the Warriors would welcome Durant back “with open arms” if he becomes available.
Golden State has already endured a frustrating offseason after unsuccessfully pursuing LeBron James, who instead signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. With Jimmy Butler continuing his recovery from the ACL injury that ended his 2025-26 season, the Warriors are reportedly looking at all avenues to maximise Stephen Curry’s remaining championship window.
The report states that while Houston enters the season expecting to contend, a disappointing start could change Durant’s long-term future and potentially reopen the door to a Bay Area reunion.
Durant Already Turned Down One Reunion
This isn’t the first time Golden State has attempted to bring Durant back.
The Warriors were close to reacquiring the two-time NBA Finals MVP before the 2025 trade deadline, but Durant and his business partner, Rich Kleiman, shut down the proposal, preferring stability rather than another move during the season. The Warriors instead pivoted to other roster moves after the deal collapsed.
Durant spent three seasons with the Warriors between 2016 and 2019, winning two NBA championships and claiming Finals MVP honours in both title runs before departing for the Brooklyn Nets in free agency.
Steve Kerr Downplays Offseason Rumours
Despite the speculation, Warriors coach Steve Kerr has attempted to temper expectations surrounding the franchise’s offseason pursuits.
Kerr recently admitted he never believed Golden State was genuinely close to signing LeBron James despite widespread reports linking the four-time NBA champion to the Warriors.
“I didn’t even think we were realistically in the running for LeBron,” Kerr said.
“It’s just that everyone kept saying we were. It never seemed serious to me despite all the reports.”
Those comments suggest Golden State is comfortable entering the season with its current roster, although the front office remains alert for opportunities to improve.
Curry’s Championship Window Remains the Priority
At 38 years old, Curry remains the focal point of every decision the Warriors make.
After finishing 37-45 and missing the playoffs last season, the organisation is under pressure to return to championship contention while its franchise superstar is still performing at an elite level.
Whether Durant ever returns remains uncertain, particularly with Houston entering the season expecting to compete.
But if the Rockets fall out of contention and Durant becomes available, the Warriors reportedly won’t hesitate to explore one of the most talked-about reunions in recent NBA history.
