NBA: Proposed Jrue Holiday Trade Would Give Miami an Almost Unfair Starting Five

21 hours ago - Sportingbase NBA: Proposed Jrue Holiday Trade Would Give Miami an Almost Unfair Starting Five Image
A proposed three-team trade would reunite Jrue Holiday with Giannis Antetokounmpo and potentially transform Miami into the NBA’s most intimidating defensive team.

The hypothetical deal, originally constructed by Heavy, would involve the Miami Heat, Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets.

It would place Holiday alongside Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo and incoming sharpshooter Klay Thompson, creating a starting group filled with championship experience and exceptional defensive versatility.

However, this is an independently proposed trade rather than evidence of active negotiations between the three organisations.

Proposed Three-Team Trade

Under the proposed framework:

Miami Heat receive:

  • Jrue Holiday
  • Houston’s 2027 second-round pick, with Portland or New Orleans holding swap rights

Portland Trail Blazers receive:

  • Nikola Jovic
  • Miami’s 2027 second-round pick
  • Miami’s 2031 second-round pick

Houston Rockets receive:

  • Davion Mitchell

The proposal argues that Miami could package Jovic and Mitchell to produce sufficient outgoing salary for Holiday’s US$34.8 million contract.

Any real transaction would still need to satisfy the NBA’s complicated salary-matching and apron restrictions at the time it was completed.

Holiday Would Reunite With Giannis

Holiday and Antetokounmpo won the 2021 NBA championship together with Milwaukee after the Bucks acquired the defensive guard from New Orleans.

Holiday averaged 17.7 points, 6.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals during that regular season before playing a decisive role throughout Milwaukee’s championship run.

The partnership ended when the Bucks traded Holiday as part of the blockbuster Damian Lillard deal in 2023.

Holiday was subsequently moved to Boston, where he helped the Celtics win the 2024 championship during his first season with the franchise.

That history makes a Miami reunion particularly intriguing. Holiday has already proved he can succeed beside Antetokounmpo without requiring the offence to revolve around him.

Miami Would Become a Defensive Nightmare

The Heat already possess two of the NBA’s most versatile defenders in Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.

Adding Holiday would give Erik Spoelstra an elite point-of-attack defender capable of handling the opposition’s most dangerous perimeter scorer.

A defensive core featuring Holiday, Andrew Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo would have the strength, length and intelligence to switch across almost every position.

Holiday would also address Miami’s lack of an established organising point guard.

The 36-year-old averaged 16.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.6 rebounds for Portland during the 2025–26 regular season while shooting approximately 38 per cent from three-point range.

His arrival would allow Antetokounmpo to spend less time initiating every possession while giving Thompson and Miami’s other shooters more catch-and-shoot opportunities.

The Heat have already reached an agreement to add Thompson following his contract buyout with Dallas, although his Miami contract remained subject to clearing waivers when initially reported.

Joe Johnson recently argued that Thompson’s championship pedigree could make him an ideal fit in Miami.

Adding Holiday would take that championship experience to another level.

Portland Has Little Reason to Accept

The largest problem with the proposed trade is Portland’s return.

Jovic remains an interesting young forward, but two second-round selections may not be enough to convince the Trail Blazers to surrender a productive veteran with significant playoff value.

Portland also appears determined to keep Holiday despite its crowded backcourt featuring Ja Morant, Damian Lillard and Scoot Henderson.

New Trail Blazers coach Micah Nori recently described Holiday as “a big part of what we’ve got going”, indicating the franchise does not currently view him as a disposable contract.

Holiday is owed US$34.8 million for 2026–27 and holds a US$37.2 million player option for the following season.

That contract carries considerable risk for an ageing player, but Portland could still receive stronger offers from genuine contenders if Holiday becomes available before the trade deadline.

The Trail Blazers may prefer to retain him as an experienced leader or wait until injuries and disappointing starts create more desperate buyers during the season.

Miami Would Also Sacrifice Valuable Depth

The proposed move would require Miami to surrender both Jovic and Mitchell after already sacrificing several important players and draft assets to acquire Antetokounmpo.

Mitchell started 70 games during the 2025–26 season and averaged 9.3 points and 6.5 assists while shooting 39.5 per cent from three.

He may not possess Holiday’s championship record, but he is nine years younger and considerably cheaper.

Jovic also provides size, shooting and developmental upside for a Miami roster that has already become increasingly dependent on veteran players.

Holiday would unquestionably improve the Heat’s immediate title chances, but another win-now transaction would leave the franchise with even fewer young assets and limited flexibility.

A Terrifying Idea That Remains Unlikely

A starting lineup featuring Holiday, Thompson, Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo would give Miami an extraordinary combination of defence, shooting and championship experience.

It could also make the Heat the clear favourite in the Eastern Conference.

The connection between Holiday and Antetokounmpo makes basketball sense, while Portland’s crowded guard rotation provides an obvious reason for speculation.

Yet there is currently no confirmed report that Miami has approached Portland or that Holiday has requested a trade.

The proposal is fascinating because of what it could create, not because a blockbuster agreement appears imminent.

Unless Miami improves the return or Portland suddenly changes its position, this potential superteam is more likely to remain an offseason fantasy than become the NBA’s next reality.
