The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Darius Slayton of Norcross, Georgia on Tuesday according to the Associated Press. The length of the contract and the financial terms of the deal have not yet been announced. However, what we do know according to Michael David Smith of NBC Sports is that Slayton is making $9.75 million of guaranteed money this season after being cut by the New York Giants on September 7.
The Colts were in need of another wide receiver after an injury to wide receiver Alec Pierce during week two in primetime on Sunday night. Pierce re-injured his heel that has been giving him some trouble for quite some time, and will miss at least a month after being placed on the Colts’s injury reserve list. Pierce was seen hopping on one foot and in considerable amount of pain after getting to the sideline. He was then carted off the field. Pierce’s absence was significant as the Colts lost 33-30 to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.
In Indianapolis, there is an expectation that Slayton could see plenty of playing time immediately and be slated into a WR2 spot. That is because it is expected that wide receiver Keenan Allen will be suspended three games by the NFL for an alleged drunk driving incident according to the Associated Press on Sunday.
Slayton is joining his second NFL franchise after seven seasons with the Giants. Last year he had 37 catches for 538 receiving yards and one touchdown. For his career, Slayton has 296 catches for 4435 receiving yards and 22 touchdown catches.
