AFL’s New Taunting Rule Under Fire After Luke Ryan and Dane Rampe Free Kicks Spark Debate

The AFL introduced its crackdown on taunting to stamp out “fake tough guy” acts. Less than four months later, the new interpretation is dividing the football world after two controversial free kicks overshadowed Fremantle’s blockbuster win over Sydney.

The spotlight fell on the league’s newest point of emphasis after both Luke Ryan and Dane Rampe conceded free kicks for rubbing an opponent’s head during Thursday night’s top-of-the-table clash at Optus Stadium.

The first incident came early in the opening quarter.

After Alex Pearce spoiled Chad Warner’s snap near the goal line, Ryan walked over and briefly rubbed Warner’s head.

Warner immediately appealed to the umpire, who awarded a free kick for taunting. Charlie Curnow was brought to the goal square and converted, handing Sydney an easy major that left Fremantle players and fans stunned.

The controversy didn’t end there.

Later in the match, Sydney veteran Dane Rampe was also penalised after ruffling Jye Amiss’ hair following a contest, with the second decision prompting further confusion among commentators and supporters.

The incidents quickly reignited debate over whether the AFL has gone too far.

Speaking on Fox Footy, several AFL greats questioned whether such minor acts should result in free kicks, arguing the punishment appeared excessive when compared to other forms of on-field niggle.

Others, however, argued the league had little choice.

The AFL introduced the stricter interpretation earlier this season after Fremantle forward Patrick Voss rubbed Melbourne defender Harrison Petty’s head before making a crying gesture during a heated clash. The league subsequently instructed umpires to immediately award free kicks for similar acts in an effort to eliminate taunting from the game.

Both coaches accepted the rulings after Thursday night’s match.

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir and Sydney coach Dean Cox agreed the incidents were avoidable, acknowledging players have been clearly warned about the new interpretation.

That doesn’t mean the debate will disappear.

Many supporters have questioned whether a brief head rub deserves the same punishment as more serious acts of misconduct, particularly when the infringement can directly lead to a goal.

Others believe consistency is more important than severity.

If the AFL has decided taunting will no longer be tolerated, then every player must be judged by the same standard—regardless of how harmless the act might appear.

For now, that’s exactly how the game is being officiated.

Ryan and Rampe both paid the price.

Whether fans agree with the rule is another question entirely.
