AFL: “Godawful Mess” Swans Could Make Ruthless Trade Calls After Season Ending Bans

Sydney’s premiership campaign is in turmoil, but the fallout could extend far beyond September as five suspended players face uncertain futures at the club.

Riley Bice, Nick Blakey, Isaac Heeney, James Jordon and Chad Warner have been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season, including the finals, after Sydney determined they had breached its behavioural standards.

The sanctions are separate from an ongoing Victoria Police investigation into a report of an alleged sexual assault at an East Melbourne hotel.

None of the five players has been arrested or charged, and Sydney has not alleged that any of them committed a criminal offence. Their individual involvement in the incident being investigated has not been publicly established.

The club’s punishment instead relates to confirmed internal breaches involving staying out late, drinking, continuing the night and bringing women back to the team hotel.

Will All Five Players Remain at Sydney?

The next major question is whether every suspended player will remain with the Swans in 2027.

Chairman Andrew Pridham was asked directly whether the five would play for Sydney again but stopped short of offering any guarantees.

“We just have to wait and see what happens going forward,” Pridham said.

The carefully worded response leaves the door open for further disciplinary action once the police investigation is completed. It also creates the possibility that Sydney could explore at least one significant trade during the offseason.

Speaking on Fox Footy’s AFL 360, Garry Lyon predicted the group might not return to the club intact.

“I would be surprised if they’re all there,” Lyon said.

“We know how it works, we’re not stupid, but I don’t think in this instance, the fact that you’re the best player or the third-best player or the fifth-best player is necessarily going to save you in the manner that it has in years gone by.”

Lyon added that Sydney appeared prepared to make difficult decisions regardless of a player’s importance.

“That’s a really hard decision and one that, based on what we see today, the Sydney Swans aren’t going to shy away from,” he said.

Chad Warner Looms as the Obvious Trade Candidate

Warner’s situation could become the most significant trade story.

The star midfielder is contracted until the end of 2027 after rejecting interest from Western Australian clubs and signing a short-term extension with Sydney.

That contract structure means the Swans could face a difficult decision. Trading Warner at the end of 2026 would potentially produce a considerable return, while retaining him could allow the midfielder to explore free agency one year later.

According to the scenario examined by Fox Sports, Sydney may consider whether moving Warner now would protect his trade value.

However, no trade request has been made and the Swans have not publicly indicated that they intend to move him. Any suggestion of a departure remains speculation.

Nick Blakey is contracted through 2031, while Isaac Heeney’s deal runs until the end of 2029. Bice signed an extension through 2028 earlier this year, and Jordon is contracted for 2027.

Long-term contracts make forced departures difficult, but they do not prevent clubs and players from negotiating trades.

Sydney’s Premiership Bid Has Been “Torpedoed”

The immediate football damage is enormous.

Sydney has secured second place and two home finals, yet it will enter September without five regular members of its best side.

Warner, Blakey and Jordon have played every game this season, while Heeney and Bice have each made 20 appearances.

Champion Data ranked Heeney, Warner and Blakey among the competition’s top 20 players before the bans, illustrating how dramatically Sydney’s premiership prospects have changed.

Pridham acknowledged the club had effectively sacrificed its flag campaign by imposing the sanctions.

“To effectively torpedo our season by making a decision such as this just tells you how seriously we’re taking it,” he said.

Lyon delivered an even blunter assessment of Sydney’s football position.

“They’re in a mess,” he said. “They’re in a godawful mess.”

The Swans will still host a qualifying final at the SCG, but their opponent will no longer have to devise plans for Heeney’s midfield and forward impact, Warner’s explosiveness, Blakey’s attacking movement from defence or Jordon’s defensive assignments.

Bloods Culture Faces Its Biggest Test

Sydney’s celebrated “Bloods culture” has long been regarded as one of the strongest in Australian sport, but that reputation is now under scrutiny.

Lyon suggested the events had forced the football world to reconsider its perception of the club.

“From where we sat, it was always ‘Bloods culture, best practices, no-dickhead policy’ — all that’s out the window and being questioned strongly,” he said.

Gerard Whateley offered a more measured assessment, arguing that the actions of five players should not automatically define an entire organisation.

Sydney’s response supports that distinction. Rather than protecting its premiership ambitions, the club imposed a penalty it knew could end its season.

The five players subsequently issued a joint apology and accepted the sanctions.

“We are deeply sorry to everyone involved,” their statement read.

“We know that our behaviour has fallen well short of the standards expected of us and the values of our club.”

Sydney chief executive Matthew Pavlich has stressed that the club will continue supporting the players despite removing them from selection.

“We’re not abandoning our players,” Pavlich said.

“We are supporting our players through this really challenging time for them.”

That support does not guarantee all five will remain at the Swans. Decisions regarding their futures must wait until the police process has progressed and the club has established what further action, if any, is appropriate.

For now, Sydney’s finals campaign has been dramatically weakened and its reputation damaged. The more difficult question is whether the consequences will eventually include one of the AFL’s biggest names leaving the club.
