Randwick Guineas/Canterbury Stakes Day turned out an awesome day of racing. Check out the four black booked runners below!

Inkaruna

There was a lot to like about the return of the Anthony and Sam Freedman filly’s return in the Fireball. She jumped fairly from the inside draw and settled behind the leader on the rail. She was then held up behind Hidden Motive, who did show a great kick at the top of the straight, but still only managed to come across heels at the 150m. She charged home to only just miss finishing 0.1L 2nd to the highly rated Beadman. Her final 200m was 11.21s, which was still 0.11s quicker than Beadman’s despite the inconvenience. All things being equal she would’ve been a clear winner. I expect her to improve off that run with no official trial heading in. She has two great 1200m options in a fortnight on Slipper Day where she can target fillies and mare company in the G3 Birthday Card Stakes or stick with the 3yos in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes.

Sheza Alibi

The obvious runner to be following out of the meeting. She was nothing short of outstanding blowing away the colts by 3.2L in the Randwick Guineas. She found some early trouble when J Mac forced her 3-wide aboard Autumn Boy. She went back a pair to take his back and got a nice cart into the race on the turn. When she levelled up with Ninja and Autumn Boy at the 300m we looked set for a great finish but it was anything but competitive when she charged away down the outside. The closer she got to the post the better she looked recording 34.14s/11.76s final 600m/200m splits, indicating that 2000m is well within her reach. Moody has indicated he may target the 2000m G1 Vinery heading back to fillies company. That would make it unlikely that we would see a potential mouth watering match up with Autumn Glow in the Doncaster the week later but they do look destined to lock horns.

Beiwacht

The Godolphin colt has plenty of quirks but definitely has another G1 win in him as we continue to work him out. He led them up in the G1 Canterbury and gave a great sight the whole way up the straight only going down to outstanding mare Joliestar by 0.5L with the unlucky Lady Shenandoah 0.6L away in 3rd. I think a 1400m race would find his sweet spot, which does limit him in Sydney a little. I will be keen to be with him if he can land in a race around that distance range where he can dictate the tempo.

Idle Flyer

Many were disappointed with the heavily backed $2.3 favourite’s 1.4L 4th in the Epona Girl. She showed tactical versatility settling in the 1-1 albeit on the back of a slow tempo. When they sprinted at the top of the straight she was left a little flat footed, particularly at the 300m before picking up and running through the line well the final 100m. I did think the market had it wrong at that quote 1st up over an unsuitable 1200m. If she draws a gate I will be keen to be with her 2nd up in the G2 Emancipation Stakes over 1500m  in 3 weeks.
