Australia to play Sweden in first round of Davis Cup qualifying

We now know the 13 first round Davis Cup qualifying matches in 2025. The matches will take place from February 1-2. Australia will be facing Sweden with the Swedes being the host.

Sweden and Australia have faced each other 1o times in the history of the Davis Cup, starting in 1950, with Australia winning seven times. In fact, Australia has beaten Sweden twice in the Davis Cup Final. The first time being in 1983 and the second time being in 1986. In both ties, Australia beat Sweden three matches to two at Kooyong Stadium in Melbourne. In 1983, Pat Cash of Melbourne won the clinching match, as he defeated Joakim Nystrom 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. Then in 1986 once again, the Australian hero was once again Cash. He defeated Stefan Edberg 13-11, 13-11, 6-4, and then Mikael Pernfors 2-6. 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in singles action. Cash also teamed up with John Fitzgerald of Cummins to beat Edberg and Anders Jarryd in doubles action, 6-3, 6-4. 4-6, 6-1.

However it was Sweden that won their last tie, 4-1. That took place in Adelaide in 2004. The Swedes were led by Jonas Bjorkman, who won key singles and doubles matches. First, he teamed up with Joachim Johansson to beat Wayne Arthurs and Todd Woodbridge 7-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-7, 7-5. Then Bjorkman beat Mark Philippoussis 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

Australia has had Davis Cup success in recent years. They reached the semifinals this year before losing to the host Italians. Australia also reached the final in 2022 before losing to Canada and the final in 2023 before losing to Italy. The other dozen first round matches will have Canada versus Hungary, Argentina versus Norway, Chile versus Belgium, Austria versus Finland, Germany versus Israel, Japan versus Great Britain, the United States versus Chinese Taipei, South Korea versus the Czech Republic, Serbia versus Denmark, Switzerland versus Spain, Croatia versus Slovakia, and Brazil versus France.
