Australia reaches the semifinals of the 2022 Davis Cup

Australia has reached the semifinals of the 2022 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain. On Tuesday, the Aussies won both singles matches in a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

Jordan Thompson of Sydney began the tie with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Tallon Griekspoor. That was followed by a victory for Alex De Minaur of Sydney, as he beat Botic van de Zandschulp 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Due to the fact Australia won both of their singles matches on Tuesday, the deciding doubles match did not need to be played.

The Australians qualified for the knockout stage in Malaga, by finishing in second place in Group C action in Hamburg, Germany in September. Australia won ties over France and Belgium.

Australia will next play Croatia on Friday in the semifinals. Like Australia, Croatia won both of their singles matches, and did not need to play the deciding doubles match. Borna Coric beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 7-6, and Marin Cilic beat Pablo Carreno Busta 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 on Wednesday.

The other two quarterfinal draws will take place on Thursday. Italy will face the United States and Canada will face Germany. The Canadians catch a break due to the fact they do not have to face world number 12 Alexander Zverev of Germany. The Hamburg native who reached the final of the 2020 United States Open, has not played since suffering a serious ankle injury in the semifinals of the 2022 French Open. The Canadians will be very tough this weekend. They will feature two players in the top 20 as Felix Auger-Aliassime is sixth in the world, and Denis Shapovalov is 18th.
