Ashleigh Barty wins 2022 Australian Open women’s title
January 30, 2022

Ashleigh Barty has won her third career grand slam women’s title. On Saturday, Barty won her first career Australian Open title as she defeated Danielle Collins of the United States 6-3, 7-6. She previously won the 2019 French Open and 2021 Wimbledon.
Barty had a great start and an excellent finish. She broke Collins in the sixth game of the first set to take a 4-2 lead. Then in the second set, Barty came back from a 5-1 deficit, and forced a tiebreak. In the second set tiebreak, Barty was dominant as she won seven of the nine points.
In the second set, Collins seemed to be a little bit distracted as her bracelet flew off her wrist. The veteran American played an excellent first half of the second set, but was unable to sustain a high level of play in the second half.

Barty had the statistical advantage when it came to aces and winners. She had 10 aces and 30 winners, compared to only one ace and 17 winners for Collins.
In the Open Era, Barty has become the fifth Australian woman to win the Australian Open women’s singles title. She is joined by Margaret Court (1969, 1970, 1971, and 1973), Evonne Goolagong (1974, 1975, 1976, 1977), Kerry Melville Reid (1977), and Chris O’Neil (1978). Please note there were two Australian Open champions in 1977, as the event changed in the calendar year from January to December.
On Sunday, the men’s final in Melbourne will take place as world number one Daniil Medvedev of Russia will face world number six Rafael Nadal of Spain. Nadal has the 3-1 advantage head to head.
