Ascot Selections & Staking Plan: Saturday 17th April

Bullish this week. Think there are some really nice bets to be had on Sires day at Ascot on a perfect day for racing. No wind, fair track, exciting card.

Race 1 – 11:53PM BUDGET TRUCK RENTAL MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

1. Miami City – 6. Lonehand Larry – 3. Yardman – 5. Paeroa Lad

Miami City

Will struggle to get a more perfect race to break his maiden than this Miami City. Comes here out of two high-rating maidens up the straight at Pinjarra, particularly last start when runner up to what looks a very smart Miss Livinia in a race where they ran serious time on a rain-affected track. Options for Pateman here to either step to the top or take the box-seat in behind a couple of speed injectors that will come across from out-wide and just looks very hard to beat. Can knock most of the other maidens in this, Pateman has hopped off the 2nd favourite for him and he has by far the best platform.

Race 2 – 12:29PM GLENROY CHAFF HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

1. Chantorque – 4. Acromantula – 2. Iseered Iseered – 3. Vadette De Star

Chantorque

Plenty of time for this horse who is just a winner. Winner of the Placid Ark last prep who came out and won a 60+ over the 1000m here fresh last prep in a race that produced a number of subsequent winners. Is a track/distance specialist who gets in here terrifically well at the weights after the claim and is bombproof fresh. Maps beautifully on the back of the leader and should get the breaks when she needs it. Hot little race but confident that she goes on-top when the whips are cracking. Winners win.

1.5 Units WIN

Acromantula is the biggest danger if able to find the top and rail out in-front. I’ve been seriously impressed by his trial form and think he is a really nice horse who is going to go through the grades. Gets the blinkers on here so you’d anticipate the priority here is landing out in front and dictating the terms. Early in the day when it’s harder to make ground, he could prove to be very hard to go past. Really nice horse and looks a very nice quinella to have.

Race 3 – 1:09PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM AUTUMN SERIES HEAT 3 (1200 METRES)

Race 4 – 1:45PM ALL FLAGS SIGNS AND BANNERS HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

9. Miss Conteki – 1. Nerodio – 3. Chix Pic – 5. War God

Race 5 – 2:25PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (2400 METRES)

5. Koranis – 2. Final Chill – 12. Sheikh It – 8. Hyperspace

Race 6 – 3:04PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

4. Plutocracy – 5. River Beau – 8. Captain Kink – 6. We’ve Got Dreams

Plutocracy

He’s absolutely flying and fark he was stiff in a very hot form race behind River Beau and Clairvoyance when brutally squeezed trying to take an inside run. Had his momentum terribly halted and in my opinion I genuinely reckon he was going past Clairvoyance there. Gets a lovely little 3kg weight swing back in his favour here (2kgs on River Beau), the speed will be piled on in spades and if Carbery can land him in a 2-3 deep moving line with a toe into it on the corner (potentially on the back of River Beau), he is going to be charging late off a breakneck tempo.

1.5 Units EACH WAY

River Beau is going from strength to strength and is an incredibly strong short-course performer, as shown by all 4 of his runs this prep. Sat wide the trip without any cover when knocking off Clairvoyance (who then went out and ran the fastest 1200m Ascot trip of the last few years). Likely has to endure a similar run here and potentially an even stronger tempo, but you know that even if he is 3 deep without cover it won’t bother him. No knocks. Form is super.

Captain Kink was massive 1st up with the 60kgs when within a length of Miss Conteki and River Beau after being momentarily halted passing the 250m, arguably should have finished even closer. Gets a 2.5kg swing on River Beau here, and maps to hop on the back of We’ve Got Dreams absorbing what should be a brutal tempo. I’m just willing to risk here, given if you look 3 starts back Plutocracy should have beaten Captain Kink over this track/trip, and absorbing this tempo sitting closer to the speed here (as he will) may take the zing out of his legs late.

Race 7 – 3:40PM SEACORP HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

4. Big Bada Boom – 9. Off Wego – 6. Black Shadow – 1. Bonneville Black

Big Bada Boom

The huge beneficiary of Saucy Jack being scratched, as he should now get a very soft lead out in-front bowling along. Went to the 1800m a fortnight ago when absorbing a very solid tempo and was only gunned down late by Black Shadow off a 59 day-let up, would undoubtedly have been a little underdone and now with the freshened run under his belt and a far more economic map, he will get every opportunity to hold them off here. The form has also been franked since, with Kerman Rock running a close up 3rd in the WATC Derby. The Great Southerner looks very hard to get past.

2.5 Units WIN

Race 8 – 4:20PM W.A. SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES (1400 METRES)

7. Liwa – 1. Ex Sport Man – 3. Diamond Blue – 9. Hoi An

Completely torn in the Sires between Liwa & Ex Sport Man.

Liwa was terribly unlucky when laid in on by Pat’s Got Sass passing the 200 as he was just starting to hit overdrive in the Karrakatta, while Ex Sport Man bundled the start and if he was able to step with them, you simply have to give him a couple more lengths. Both are racing like the 1400m may even suit them better than the 1200m and are co-incidentally drawn side by side in barriers 3 and 4. Will be interesting to see how the race plays out and if one (or both) find trouble in the run.

The value for me lies with Diamond Blue, for Ted Martinovich. Drew terribly wide in the Karrakatta, where he was taken back to the tail in a frantically run race. Was really cluttered up on straightening and had to duck back to the inside, where I thought he finished off very nicely from an impossible position. Finds a race here that has far less lethal early speed injected, so from barrier 2 Jade should be just about able to find the top or leaders back here, where from there I think he is a much better winning chance than the current $23 on offer. Will endure a far different run in transit to the Karrakatta and should result in far greater influence in this race.

0.25 Units WIN/0.75 Units PLACE

Race 9 – 5:00PM SALINGER HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

2. Billy Ain’t Silly – 1. Tinsnip – 7. Holy Ghost – 3. Amelia’s Contraire

Billy Ain’t Silly

This just looks perfect placement for Billy. Finds an arguably easier race, gets in with less weight, and a map lacking genuine early speed where he can land either outside Me N Taz in the breeze or just in behind stalking. Last start’s victory where he absorbed a hot tempo and ripped away once they straightened rated really well and any sort of repeat performance and he will have panels on these. Very progressive 3YO up against the older horses who can sit over the speed and still let down powerfully gets my vote. $1.80 chance and there is $2.15 on offer, keen the punters can blast out.
