An American man is guaranteed to be in the final of the 2024 United States Open. On Tuesday, two American men won their quarterfinal matchup, which guaranteed an all-American semifinal on Friday. The 12th seed Taylor Fritz of San Diego, California beat the fourth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Then, the 20th seed Frances Tiafoe of Hyattsville, Maryland defeated the ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov via a walkover after Tiafoe was leading 6-3 6-7, 6-3, 4-1. Dimitrov withdrew because of a lower body injury.
This is the second time at a major this season that Dimitrov could not complete a match due to injury. He withdrew from the fourth round of Wimbledon against Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the first set because of a groin injury. Dimitrov was trailing Medvedev 5-3 at the time.
The last time an American man reached the final of a grand slam tournament was 2009. That is when Andy Roddick of Omaha, Nebraska reached the final of Wimbledon against the great Roger Federer of Switzerland, and lost a five-set thriller, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14. It is considered one of the greatest tennis matches of all-time.
The last time an American man won a grand slam singles tournament was 2003. Twenty-one years ago Roddick beat Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the final of the U.S. Open.
All-time, Fritz has won six of seven meetings. Tiafoe’s only win came in the first round of Indian Wells in 2016, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Since then Fritz has won 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of Winston-Salem (at Wake Forest University) in 2016, in the first round of the Paris Masters in 2019 (7-6, 3-6, 6-4), in the second round of the Australian Open in 2022 (6-4, 6-3, 7-6), in the second round of Montreal in 2022 (5-7, 6-1, 6-4), in the final of Japan in 2022 (7-6, 7-6), and in the quarterfinals of Acapulco in 2023 (6-3, 6-4).
