Alex de Minaur reaches fourth career grand slam career quarterfinal
September 4, 2024
Alex de Minaur of Sydney is in the quarterfinals of a grand slam for the fourth time in his career. On Labour Day Monday in Flushing Meadows, New York, de Minaur defeated fellow Australian Jordan Thompson of Sydney, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the fourth round in an all-Australian battle at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The difference to the match was simple. De Minaur saw Thompson’s serve really well. He had 13 break point opportunities, of which he broke Thompson seven times.
De Minaur will now face Great Britain’s Jack Draper in the quarterfinals. De Minaur will be favoured as he is the 10th seed, while Draper is the 25th seed. De Minaur has won all three prior matches. All matches came within the last two years. De Minaur won 5-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of Wimbledon in 2022, and in the first round of the 2023 Japan Open, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6. Then in the semifinals of Acapulco in 2024, de Minaur won 6-3, 2-6. 4-0 as Draper retired during the match with an illness.
Two of the top five players in the world will be in one quarterfinal. In an Australian Open final rematch, Jannik Sinner of Italy, the first seed, is facing Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the fifth seed. Meanwhile, five-time quarterfinalist Taylor Fritz of the United States will face Alexander Zverev of Germany, and Frances Tiafoe of the USA will face Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.
In women’s action, there will be an Australian Open final rematch as well. Qinwen Zheng of China faces Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. We will also see American Jessica Pegula against Poland’s Iga Swiatek, American Emma Navarro against Spain’s Paula Badosa and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia against the Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova.
