2022 AFL Round 20 Preview: Our Selections

Our AFL analyst has taken a look at round 20 and has put together his selections for each game.

FREMANTLE DOCKERS v MELBOURNE DEMONS. 8.10pm, tonight Optus Stadium

There’s a lot at stake in this match in this clash where the fifth placed home team takes on the second placed team. The Dees have been spluttering over the past two months with only three wins and they have also lost two of their past three matches. The Dockers also lost two weeks ago and then drew with Richmond last week. It was only late May that the Dockers defeated Melbourne easily by 38 points. The Dockers defence is almost impenetrable, and they can win on their home deck.

  •   1 unit ($100) Fremantle H2H @ $2.12
  •   1 unit ($100) Either Team to Win By Less Than 15 Points @ $2.35
  •   1 unit ($100) Total Match Points 142.5 @ $1.95

COLLINGWOOD v PORT ADELAIDE. 1.45pm. Saturday, MCG

The Houdini of the AFL, Collingwood will attempt an amazing 10th straight win and keep their spot in the top four when they take on Port Adelaide who are in 11th spot and can’t make the eight. Port have been beaten in their past matches by the top two teams on the ladder in Geelong and Melbourne. When these teams last met in round 19 last year, Port won by 28 points at Marvel Stadium and they have won their past three clashes and seven of their past nine. They match up well against Collingwood.

  •   1 unit ($100) Port Adelaide H2H @ $2.17
  •   1 unit ($100) Port Adelaide To Win Both Halves @ $3

SYDNEY SWANS V GWS GIANTS, 2.10 pm Saturday

It’s the Sydney derby and it’s a clash which usually carries a lot of gravitas – not this time around though. The Swans are surging up the ladder with three wins in a row and sit in sixth spot on the ladder. The Giants are 15th on the ladder and have lost their past three matches. There is a good rivalry between these teams with each having three wins and three losses from their past six meetings. Sydney won their Round One clash by 20 points which was the Giants home game.

  •   2 units ($200) Swans – 25.5 @ $1.90
  •   SGM: Swans -25.5 | Over 169 Points @ $3.70

ST KILDA v HAWTHORN, 4.35pm Marvel Stadium, Saturday

The Saints, who sit ninth on the ladder must win this to stay in the finals race. They showed a return to form last week, defeating the Eagles in Perth by 32 points. The Hawks have snuck under the radar in recent weeks winning their past three matches against the three bottom sides – The Crows, the Eagles and the Roos. The Saints are going for five in a row against the Hawks. They have won their past two clashes including Round 4 this year by 69 points. The Saints though have lost two key players in Jack Billings and Jack Gresham.

  •   1 unit ($100) Hawthorn H2H @ $2.25

GEELONG CATS v WESTERN BULLDOGS, 7.25pm, GMHBA Stadium, Saturday

Again another important match in terms of the finals. The Cats are also aiming for their tenth straight win and they sit a game clear on top of the ladder. The Bulldogs are on a late season surge having won their past two matches including last week’s win against the Demons. These teams usually have close affairs but the Cats have won the past three clashes. The Cats have won 16 of their 18 against the Dogs.

  •    1 unit ($100) Western Bulldogs +19.5 points @ $1.95
  •    1 unit ($100) Over 164.5 points @ $1.85

ADELAIDE CROWS v CARLTON BLUES, 7.30pm Adelaide Oval, Saturday

The seventh Blues can take another important step in ending their finals drought by securing a win against the 16th placed Crows. The Crows have lost their past four matches but have been competitive against Collingwood and Sydney at their past two clashes while the Blues easily dealt with the Giants last Sunday. The Blues have a terrible record at Adelaide Oval having played there five time for five losses with an average losing margin of 71.8 points.

  •   1 unit ($100) Adelaide H2H @ $3.30
  •   1 unit ($100) Adelaide +17.5 points @ $1.85
  •   1 unit($100) Taylor Walker Most Goals @ $4.60

GOLD SUNS v WEST COAST EAGLES, 1.10pm Metricon Stadium, Sunday

The Suns respectable loss to the Lions probably cost them any chance of playing in the finals but they can get their slim hopes alive against the Eagles, who after showing a glimpse of form, are again playing poorly with losses in their past four matches to be 17th. The Suns have only won three from 14 against the Eagles but can boast of two of their past three. At their last clash at home, they romped in by 44 points in Round 2, 2020.

RICHMOND TIGERS v BRISBANE LIONS, 3.20pm MCG, Sunday

The Tigers return to their happy hunting ground for the first time in a month after a forgettable three weeks of imploding at the finish of matches. They need to win to stay in the finals race while the Lions also need four points to stay in the top four. The Lions have lost their past ten matches at the MCG stretching back to 2014. The Tigers won 15 in a row against the Lions before two losses but won in Round 19 late last year. The Lions last win at the G against the Tigers was in 2009.

  •   2 units ($200) Any Other Result Tri-Bet at $2.56
  •   2 units ($200) Over 175.5 points at $1.95

ESSENDON v NORTH MELBOURNE, 4.40pm, Marvel Stadium, Sunday.

The Kangaroos followed the predictable script following their drought breaking win against the Tigers with a lamentable effort against the Hawks while the Bombers were unlucky against the in-form Collingwood with a goal after the siren sinking them. Essendon are shooting for eight in a row against the Roos and it’s hard to see them not achieving that.
