It has been a great start to the 2020-21 National Basketball Association season for the Los Angeles Lakers, especially away from the Staples Center where they had a 10-game road winning streak to start the year. However, that streak came to an end on Wednesday, when they were beaten 107-106, in a narrow one-point loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Just how impressive was the Lakers’ 10-game road winning streak? Well, it was the fourth-longest road winning streak in NBA history to start a season according to ESPN. The only teams with a longer winning streak at the beginning of a season were the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors (14), the 2016-17 San Antonio Spurs (13), and the 1969-70 New York Knicks (12).

The Lakers’ 10-game road streak started on December 30 with a 121-107 win over the Spurs. That was followed by a 109-103 win over the Spurs on New Year’s Day, a 108-94 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on January 3, a 94-92 win over the Grizzlies on January 5, a 120-102 win over the Houston Rockets on January 10, a 117-100 win over the Rockets on January 12, a 128-99 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 13, a 113-106 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on January 21, a 101-90 win over the Chicago Bulls on January 23, and a 115-108 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 25. Despite the 10-game winning streak,  the Lakers are only at .500 at Staples Center (four wins and four losses at home).

In Wednesday’s 76ers one-point win, Tobias Harris recorded the game-winning shot for Philadelphia with a 15-foot jump shot from Seth Curry with three seconds left. Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 28 points. Philadelphia improved to a record of 13 wins and six losses, while the Lakers fell to a record of 14 wins and five losses.

Even though the 76ers are the best in the East, the Lakers are not the best in the West. With Los Angeles’s loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday, and the Utah Jazz’s 116-104 win over the Dallas Mavericks, Utah has the best record not only in the West, but the entire NBA at the moment, at 14 wins and four losses.
