49ers trade Matt Breida to the Dolphins
April 28, 2020
According to Rogers Sportsnet, the San Francisco 49ers have traded running back Matt Breida of Brandon, Florida to the Miami Dolphins for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2020 National Football League Draft on Saturday. The 49ers selected offensive tackle Colton McKivitz of Belmont, Ohio, who spent his collegiate career at West Virginia University.
In moving to Miami, Breida will be going from the west coast to the east coast of the United States. He had spent the last three seasons with the 49ers. Originally undrafted, Breida signed with the 49ers on May 4, 2017.
During the 2019 National Football League regular season, Breida played 13 games and had 123 rushes for 623 yards and one touchdown. He also had 19 catches for 120 yards and one touchdown. Breida’s two touchdowns in 2019 came in the same game as the 49ers defeated the Cleveland Browns 31-3 on October 7.
In the 28-point romp over Cleveland, Breida had 114 rushing yards. It is one of two times this past season that Breida surpassed over 100 yards rushing. He also had 121 yards rushing in the 49ers 41-17 win over the NFL’s other Ohio-based team, the Cincinnati Bengals.
There is no doubt that Breida was expendable because of San Francisco’s marvelous running back depth. They currently have Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, Jerick McKinnon, and Jeff Wilson Jr. in their system. Mostert had a remarkable NFC Championship Game as he had 220 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the 49ers hammered the Green Bay Packers 37-20.
In Miami, expect Breida to back up Jordan Howard of Gardendale, Alabama. Howard signed a two-year contract worth $9.75 million to join the Dolphins at running back on March 21.
