2022 AFL Round 21 Preview: Our Selections
August 5, 2022
Our AFL analyst has taken a look at round 21 and has put together his selections for each game.
MELBOURNE v COLLINGWOOD –Â 7.50pm Friday night, MCG
The Houdini of the AFL, Collingwood take on the reigning premiers Melbourne and should be entering the match with a great deal of confidence. Not only have they won their past ten matches but they have also beaten Melbourne at their past two encounters including the last one in Round 13.
Melbourne clicked back to their best last week against Fremantle and with the finals around the corner, they will be looking to build momentum. They’ve got most of their best players available and they will also be looking to make a statement with the finals around the corner.
- Â 2 units ($200) Melbourne -17.5 @ $1.91 with Picklebet
- Â SGM: 1 unit ($100) Melbourne To Win | Brown to kick more than 2 goals @ $4.58 with Picklebet
HAWTHORN v GOLD COAST –Â 1.45pm Saturday, University of Tasmania Oval, Launceston
The Gold Coast have a slim chance of making the eight and will need to keep winning. The Hawks finished strongly against the Saints last week but left their run too late. The Suns have easily accounted for the Hawks at their past two meetings but have yet to beat them at Launceston in five meetings.
The Hawks have lost Jiath and Lewis going into this match which might sway it into the Sun’s favour.
- Â 1 unit ($100) Gold Coast Suns H2H @ $1.85 with Picklebet
GWS GIANTS v ESSENDON –Â 2.10pm, Saturday Giants Stadium, Sydney
Will the Giants players respond to their coach Mark McVeigh believing only eight of them had a crack last week against Sydney or will they reaffirm his position that the majority of the players have checked out for the season. If they have checked out the resurgent Bombers will have a nice easy afternoon ahead of them.
Essendon have won four of their past five matches with their only loss a narrow one to Collingwood while the Giants have lost their past four matches.
- Â 1 unit ($100) Essendon +32.5 @ $3.90 with Picklebet

WESTERN BULLDOGS v FREMANTLE DOCKERS –Â 4.35pm Saturday, Marvel Stadium
The Bulldogs dominated the Cats for the first 50 minutes but were then obliterated at Kardinia Park last week. They have picked a stronger side for this match. Fremantle were poor against at the Demons. They will try and strangle the Bulldogs but they aren’t playing well enough to win.
The Bulldogs have won their past three matches against the Dockers by 47 points, 30 points and 28 points. Look for a similar margin again.
- Â 2 units ($200) Bulldogs H2H @ $1.47 with Picklebet
GEELONG CATS v ST KILDA –Â 7.25pm Saturday, GMHBA Stadium, Geelong
The Saints need to win to improve their chances of making the eight but face no tougher task than the Cats on their home turf although they were the last team to defeat the Cats when they last met at Marvel Stadium on May 14. The Saints last win at Kardinia Park was in 1999 although they were competitive there last year losing by 14 points.
The Cats have rested Joel Selwood after his 350thgame. Could there be a letdown factor for them?
- Â 1 unit ($100) Saints +34.5 points @ $1.87 with Picklebet
PORT ADELAIDE v RICHMOND –Â 7.40pm Saturday, Adelaide Oval
Expect the Tigers to again be involved in a tight contest. They need to win to stay alive in the race for the finals, as they are presently ninth. These teams invariably play close matches. The Power do not have a recognised ruckman which will give Tiger captain Toby Nankervis a big advantage and his team.
Tom Lynch returned for the Tigers last week and kicked four goals. Look for a big night for him. Todd Marshall is a big out for the Power.
- Â 1 unit ($100) Port Adelaide 1-14 @ $4.60 with Picklebet
NORTH MELBOURNE v SYDNEY –Â 1.10pm Sunday, Marvel Stadium
The finals are around the corner and Sydney can help secure a top spot against the Kangaroos. They have won their past four matches with the lowest winning margin 17 points and they come up against the bottom team.
The only negative is that they have played Marvel twice this season for two losses. North have been belted twice since winning against the Tigers.
- Â 1 unit ($100) Sydney -47.5 points @ $1.89 with Picklebet

BRISBANE LIONS v CARLTON –Â 3.20pm Sunday, Gabba
The Brisbane Lions coughed up a 42-point lead against the Tigers last Sunday. They return to their happy hunting ground against the Blues and need to win if they want to get back into the top four. They have won eight of their nine games at the Gabba.
The Blues have been hit by injury and were poor against Adelaide at their last match.
- Â 1 unit ($100) Brisbane -18.5 at $1.93 with Picklebet
WEST COAST EAGLES v ADELAIDE CROWS –Â 4.10pm, Sunday, Optus Stadium, Perth
The Eagles showed some fighting spirit to almost pinch the match against the Suns last week while the Crows put in one of their best performances for the season against the Blues. The Eagles will be keen to win for their champion full forward’s Josh Kennedy farewell game.
Adelaide is yet to win from three matches at Optus Stadium.

- Â 1 unit ($100) over 161.5 total match points @ $1.92 with Picklebet
