2021 NRL Round 9 Preview: Our Selections & Staking Plan

Round 9 presents an interesting week from a betting perspective with several mismatches & plenty of value on offer so we have bet accordingly with 14 units spread across 10 bets.

2021 Season Tipping Results:

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS VS MELBOURNE STORM – THURSDAY MAY 6, 7:50PM, STADIUM AUSTRALIA

What a way to kick off round 9 with two competition heavyweights at Stadium Australia.

These teams met back in Round 1 with the Storm continuing their recent dominance over this head-to-head, winning 26-18 to move the Rabbitohs’ record in Melbourne to 0-17.

Since then, the Rabbitohs haven’t lost, but the injury toll has started to mount. The Storm have had a similarly impressive run, stringing together five straight wins by 16+ points.

While the Rabbits have been tough to fault this year, they’ll have to go about their business on Thursday night without Adam Reynolds, Cam Murray, Jaxson Paulo and Campbell Graham.

PENRITH PANTHERS VS CRONULLA SHARKS – FRIDAY MAY 7, 6:00PM, PENRITH STADIUM

Penrith has an outstanding opportunity to keep its unbeaten record intact as they set their sights on a Sharks outfit that has now lost four in a row.

The chances of Cronulla pulling off an upset on the road appear slim, but new head coach Josh Hannay will be asking for some improvement from his side following last week’s 40-14 loss to the Storm.

Add that to the fact that the Panthers have had no trouble racking up the points against the Sharks in recent years and you’ll know which way to go here.

PARRAMATTA EELS VS SYDNEY ROOSTERS – FRIDAY MAY 7, 7:55PM, BANKWEST STADIUM

The Eels put pay to the Bulldogs last week but it wasn’t with the authority we were looking for after a lapse in concentration saw them concede 10 points in the second half.

Sydney comes into this game riding its own two-game winning streak after downing the Knights 38-4 last week in Newcastle.

The Roosters have done well to keep their heads above water through their ongoing injury crisis, but things have only gotten worse after Brett Morris and Lindsay Collins both tore their ACL’s last week.

That being said, the Roosters have won 4 straight games against the Eels who look to be playing below their best.

CANBERRA RAIDERS VS NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS – SATURDAY MAY 8, 3:00PM, MCDONALDS PARK

Both these teams arrive in Wagga Wagga with their confidence  down after big losses at home – the Knights lost by 34 points to the Roosters last week, while the Raiders went down by 14 to the Rabbitohs.

They now each have just three wins from eight rounds so far and are searching for answers as well as a return to form.

For Ricky Stuart’s side leaving Canberra for a change of scenery might help. They have lost their last three home games at GIO Stadium, and are now staring at a fifth defeat in a row.

The Knights offered little in their seven tries-to-one humiliation at the hands of the Roosters with coach Adam O’Brien saying afterwards that everyone needed to have good, hard chat on what they wanted the rest of the seasons to look like.

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS VS BRISBANE BRONCOS – SATURDAY MAY 8, 7:35PM, QUEENSLAND COUNTRY BANK STADIUM

The Broncos picked up their second win of the season with a memorable come-from-behind win over the Titans, while the Cowboys staged their own second-half comeback to fall just four points short to the Warriors.

Recent history between these two clubs suggests this game should be close, but this does look a very winnable game for the Cowboys in their return to Townsville.

Despite losing last week, North Queensland controlled the entire second half to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard, while there were also some promising signs on the Cowboys attack with Jason Taumalolo back in the fold.

That being said, the +5.5 looks a decent bet.

MANLY SEA EAGLES VS NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS – SUNDAY MAY 9, 2:00PM, BROOKVALE

Manly are well and truly back!

Manly fought hard against the unbeaten Panthers and were in it right up until Penrith’s 77th-minute match-sealer. They are entitled to carry plenty of confidence from their form over the past month.

That three-game winning run started against this weekend’s opposition in the Warriors, with Daly Cherry-Evans’ match-winning field goal a minute from time earning a 13-12 win that was celebrated like a finals game.

The Warriors have done well to sit in seventh after eight rounds but will be desperate to return the favour against Manly and take two points away from their home patch.
