ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS VS BRISBANE BRONCOS – THURSDAY JUNE 3, 7:50PM, NESTRATA JUBILEE STADIUM

The St. George Illawarra Dragons have slumped to three straight losses and six from their past seven, yet they remain in the top eight.

The Dragons will look to get back on track when they host the Brisbane Broncos at Jubilee Stadium. The Broncos remain 15th on the ladder as they aim to recapture the form that saw them stun the Roosters a fortnight ago.

On the other side, Kevin Walters’ men will be equally as desperate to forget about their 40-12 drubbing at home to the Storm.

Defensively, these two sides rank among the top three in missed tackles and handling errors, so it’s safe to say we’re in for a high-scoring game.

The Dragons have also won four of their last five against the Broncos, not to mention Brisbane’s awful 1-6 record on the road this year.

WESTS TIGERS VS PENRITH PANTHERS – FRIDAY JUNE 4, 7:55PM, LEICHARDT OVAL

Penrith remained undefeated on the season thanks to another masterful display at home, and although the Tigers have proven frisky in recent weeks with a couple of big wins over the Knights and Dragons, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Michael Maguire’s young squad pulls off one of the upsets of the season.

Due to Origin duty, the Panthers will be missing a whopping seven of their top-line stars, yet they will still head into this contest as moderate favourites based on the strength and depth of their squad.

In a timely return for the ladder leaders, Dylan Edwards is back at fullback, with Robert Jennings named on the wing. Mitch Kenny gets the start at dummy half with Matt Eisenhuth and Scott Sorensen joining the back row, while Spencer Leniu replaces the suspended Moses Leota at prop. Just one change to the starting side for Wests, with Alex Seyfarth promoted to replace Joe Ofahengaue (Origin). An upset result would give the Tigers their first set of consecutive wins this season.

MELBOURNE STORM VS GOLD COAST TITANS – SATURDAY JUNE 5, 7:35PM, SUNSHINE COAST STADIUM

Many expected the Gold Coast to be well inside the top eight by this point in the season, but now sitting 5-7, things really haven’t gone to plan for Justin Holbrook’s crew.

Last week’s 38-10 loss to the Sharks was reflective of how the Titans’ season has panned out so far, and as the market suggests, things aren’t about to get any easier against a Storm side shooting for 10 wins in a row.

To make matters worse, Melbourne has had the Titans’ number (as they have with most clubs) over the last few years winning each of their last five meetings.

The Storm won 42-6 when these two sides met last year and judging by what we’ve seen from the Titans’ defence so far, it wouldn’t be surprising if this turned into a similar result.

To be fair, the Titans have been a very strong betting play on the back of a loss recently, but it’s hard to ignore the fact the Storm have covered the line in 20 of their last 25 games as the favourite.

The Storm also won by an average margin of 24 points in their six games on the Sunshine Coast last year, so when you take that into account, this week’s line suddenly seems quite sensible.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS VS PARRAMATTA EELS – SUNDAY JUNE 6, 4:05PM, MCDONALD JONES STADIUM

Newcastle enjoyed a much-needed morale boost with their upset win over in-form Manly but will need to break a cycle that hasn’t seen them win back-to-back since the first two rounds of 2021.

There is some doubt surrounding a few key stars in this match due to Origin commitments, which does lend itself to a potentially low-scoring game.

The Eels have quietly allowed the fourth-fewest points in the league so far to opponents, while it’s also worth noting the Total has gone Under in their last two games against the Knights.

NEW SOUTH WALES VS QUEENSLAND – WEDNESDAY JUNE 9, 8:10PM, QUEENSLAND COUNTRY BANK STADIUM

This year’s Origin opener will be different for players and fans with a sellout crowd set to pack the stands in Townville for the first time in the game’s history.

After losing the 2020 series to the worst ever Queensland side in Origin history, the Blues will have a chip on their shoulder heading into Game 1 as they look to forget all about the embarrassment served to them in last year’s decider.

Fittler, who had brought the pride back to NSW with series wins in 2018 and 2019, admits he was out-coached by wily Wayne Bennett and is determined to ensure the Blues make good on their favourites tags this time around.

Both teams have been hit by injuries and suspensions with Fittler forced to go with a new-look back row and Maroons boss Paul Green gambling on the fitness of 75 percent of Queensland’s spine.
