Wembanyama named NBA’s Rookie of the Year

San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama has been named the Rookie of the Year for the 2023-24 NBA season.
The No.1 draft selection last summer, the French phenom pieced together one of the league’s all-time best rookie campaigns en route to a unanimous Rookie of the Year selection.
The 20-year-old averaged 21.4 ppg, 10.6 rpg, and a league-leading 3.6 bpg in 71 starts; post All-Star break, those numbers jumped up to 23.5 ppg, 12.0 rpg, and 4.5 bpg.
He was the first player in league history to reach 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks and 100 3-pointers made in a season.
He became the first rookie to lead the league in blocks per game since Manute Bol in 1986 and will also look to become the first rookie in league history to be voted to the All-Defensive 1st Team.
Wembanyama joins Ralph Sampson (1984), David Robinson (1990), Blake Griffin (2011), Damian Lillard (2013) and Karl-Anthony Towns (2016) as the only unanimous Rookie of the Year picks in league history.
Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren received all but one of the second-place votes with Charlotte’s Brandon Miller receiving the lone non-Holmgren vote.
Miami’s Jaime Jaquez Jr., Golden State’s Brandin Podziemski, and Dallas’ Dereck Lively II were the other players to receive votes.
