September 30, 2024

After entering day three of the 2024 Presidents Cup at the Royal Montreal Golf Club tied at five, the United States took a stranglehold of winning their 13th Presidents Cup all-time by winning six of eight Saturday matches. The Americans won three of four four-ball matches in the morning, and then three of four foursome matches in the afternoon. In the process, the Americans took a commanding 11-7 lead.
Five American golfers won two matches on Saturday. They were 2022 and 2024 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Â 2020 PGA Championship winner and 2021 British Open champion Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California, 2024 PGA Championship and 2024 British Open champion Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California, Sam Burns of Shreveport, Louisiana and Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California.
In the four ball, Scheffler and Morikawa beat Adam Scott of Australia and Taylor Pendrith of Canada 2&1, Schauffele and Tony Finau of Salt Lake City, Utah beat the all-Canadian duo of Mackenzie Hughes and Corey Conners 3&2, and Cantlay and Burns beat Hideki Matsuyama of Japan and Sungjae Im of South Korea 2&1. Then in the foursome (alternate shot) event on Saturday afternoon, Scheffler and Russell Henley of Macon, Georgia beat Matsuyama and Im 3&2, Morikawa and Burns beat Hughes and Connors one up, and Cantlay and Schauffele beat Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim of South Korea one up as well.
Cantlay, meanwhile, came up big with a key 17-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole in near darkness to give the Americans a four point lead. Play was delayed earlier on Saturday because of heavy fog.
