Australia has been eliminated from the 2024 Olympic Games in women’s football. On Wednesday, the United States beat Australia 2-1 from Stade de Marseille, and as a result knocked the Australians out of the tournament. The American goal scorers were forward Trinity Rodman of Newport Beach, California in the 43rd minute, and midfielder Korbin Albert of Grayslake, Illinois in the 77th minute.
Rodman put the United States up 1-0, and then Albert scored the game-winning goal to put the United States up 2-0. The Australian goal scorer was centre back Alanna Kennedy of Campbelltown in the second minute of the second half of extra time, but the bottom line is it was too little too late.
Australia finished the tournament at one win and two losses. Previously, they lost 3-0 to Germany on Thursday, and then beat Zambia 6-5 in one of the wildest games in women’s soccer history. In an impressive comeback, Australia trailed 5-2 with 44 minutes left before Australia scored four times to get the one goal win.
The Aussies were one of the three third place teams in pool play. Brazil and Colombia were the other two third place clubs. Australia, Brazil and Colombia all had a record of one win and two losses for three. That means for and against was used to eliminate the worst third place team. Australia was a -3 (seven goals scored and 10 goals against). Colombia was a zero (four goals scored and four goals against), and Brazil was a -2 (two goals for and four goals against). The quarterfinals will feature Canada vs. Germany, the United States versus Japan, Spain versus Colombia, and France versus Brazil.
