Day one of the 2024 Presidents Cup is in the books, and it was quite simply a dominant performance for the United States. The Americans won all five four ball matches at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and in the process took a commanding 5-0 lead heading into Friday’s foursome action.
The Americans won three of the five matches one up. Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele beat Jason Day and Byeong Hun An, Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala beat the Australian duo of Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee, and Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark beat Taylor Pendrith and Christian Bezuidenhout. Meanwhile, Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler beat Tom Kim and Sungjae Im 3&2, and Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay beat Corey Conners and Hideki Matsuyama 2&1.
Unlike the Ryder Cup, where Europe has won eight of the last 11 times, the United States have dominated the Presidents Cup. In the 14 Presidents Cups all-time, the United States have won a dozen times, the International Team has won once, and one Presidents Cup ended up in a tie.
There were two dramatic images from Thursday’s event. The first image happened at the beginning, as Canadian MacKenzie Hughes guzzled a Stella Artois to excite the crowd. The beer of choice was rather interesting because Stella Artois is Belgian, and he did not guzzle a Molson Canadian, Kokanee, Big Rock, Molson or Alexander Keith’s. The second image happened at the end, as Bradley showed an incredible amount of emotion in leading his team to an unprecedented sweep. It should be noted that Bradley is the American captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup.
