Week eight is now completed in the National Football League and it was the final week before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Here are five of the most notable storylines from the week that was.

5) Raiders shutout for the first time in eight years.

The New Orleans Saints got three touchdowns from Alvin Kamara en route to a 24-0 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. It was the first time since 2014 that the Raiders were shutout. On November 30, 2014, the St. Louis Rams clobbered the Oakland Raiders 52-0. On Sunday, the Saints defensive star was linebacker Pete Werner of Indianapolis, Indiana, who had 11 tackles.

4) Bill Belichick moves to number two all-time in coaching wins.

The New England Patriots beat the New York Jets for the 13th straight time on Sunday with a 22-17 victory. The story of the game was Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who moved into second place all-time in coaching wins with 325. Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins remains number one with 347 wins.


3) Seahawks remain in first place in NFC West.

One of the great stories of the 2022 NFL Season remains the Seattle Seahawks, who remain in first place in the NFC West. On Sunday, they beat the New York Giants 27-13 in the only game where both teams were above .500. The Seahawks are now 5-3 and the Giants drop to 6-2. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith completed 23 of 34 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns.

2) Christian McCaffrey stars for the 49ers

It did not take long before Christian McCaffrey to have a monster impact for San Francisco. On Sunday in a 31-14 win over the Los Angeles Rams, McCaffrey became the first player in 17 years to have a touchdown pass, touchdown run and touchdown catch in the same game. LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers was the last player to accomplish that feat in a 27-14 Chargers win over the Oakland Raiders on October 16, 2005. On Sunday, McCaffrey threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk, had a nine-yard touchdown catch for Jimmy Garoppolo and had a one-yard touchdown run.

1) Ravens acquire linebacker Roquan Smith.

Baltimore acquired linebacker Roquan Smith of Montezuma, Georgia on Monday from the Chicago Bears. In return the Bears received linebacker A.J. Klein of Appleton, Wisconsin, the second round pick and a fifth round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Smith meanwhile, has led the NFL this season with 83 combined tackles.
