Top five storylines from NFL Championship Weekend

5 years ago - Sportingbase Top five storylines from NFL Championship Weekend Image
Well, congratulations to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs for reaching the Super Bowl. Here are the top five storylines from the NFL Championship Weekend.

5) Tony Jones dies at age 54.

As we head to the Super Bowl, it is time to recognize a player from past Super Bowls. On Friday, two-time Super Bowl champion Tony Jones of Royston, Georgia, died at age 54. Jones was with the Denver Broncos on their offensive line when they won their two Super Bowls in 1998 and 1999. When the Broncos won the 1998 Super Bowl, Jones received high praise for his containment of the legendary Reggie White.

4) Falcons to retire Hank Aaron’s no. 44 for 2021.

In an unbelievable gesture, the Atlanta Falcons announced on Friday they will retire the number 44 for 2021 even though baseball legend Hank Aaron played professional baseball with the Atlanta Braves, and never in the NFL. Aaron, who died on Friday, was Major League Baseball’s all-time leader in runs batted in, extra-base hits, and total bases.

3) Greg Olsen retires.

The 36-year-old tight end from Paterson, New Jersey announced his retirement on Sunday after 14 seasons with the Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers, and Seattle Seahawks. Olsen had 742 catches for 8683 yards and 60 touchdowns. Three times Olsen reached 1000 yards in receiving, including a career-high 1104 yards in 2015. Olsen played only one season with the Seahawks, as he signed a one-year-deal worth $7 million in February.

2) Patrick Mahomes is healthy.

In the AFC Divisional Playoff last week, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a concussion in a 22-17 Kansas City win over Cleveland. On Sunday, there were no signs of Mahomes struggling mentally as the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 38-24 in the AFC Championship. Mahomes found wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce with ease. Hill set a Chiefs franchise record for most receiving yards in a playoff game (172), while Kelce had 13 catches for 118 yards. Kelce’s 13 catches were tied for the most ever by a tight end in a playoff game. He is tied with Kellen Winslow and Shannon Sharpe.

1)Tampa Bay Buccaneers to make Super Bowl history.

Tom Brady has accomplished a lot in his NFL career, but he has never won a Super Bowl in his home stadium. That is what he has the chance to do in less than two weeks time. In fact, this is the first time that a team that is hosting the Super Bowl is in the Super Bowl. On Sunday, the Buccaneers beat the Green Bay Packers 31-26 in the NFC Championship at Lambeau Field. The top Buccaneers player was wide receiver Chris Godwin, who had five catches for 110 yards.
