We are now 10 weeks into the National Football League season. Here are the top five headlines from the week that was. 

5) Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton has testicular cancer surgery.

Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton of Thousand Oaks, California will be out for the next while after having testicular cancer surgery on Friday. The surgery came one day after he had nine combined tackles in a 10-7 Broncos win over the Las Vegas Raiders. This season, Singleton has  89 combined tackles (53 assisted tackles and 36 solo tackles), three tackles for a loss, two quarterback hits, one pass deflection, one forced fumble and one sack. The pass deflection came in a 20-12 Broncos win over the Tennessee Titans on September 7, the sack came in a 21-17 Broncos win over the Philadelphia Eagles win on October 5, and the forced fumble came in a 44-26 Broncos win over the Dallas Cowboys on October 26. Singleton has a huge following in Canada where he played for the Calgary Stampeders from 2016 to 2018.

4) Keenan Allen sets Chargers franchise record for most career receptions.

In the Chargers’s 25-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen of Greensboro, North Carolina made franchise history. He set the Chargers record for most receptions in a career (956). On Sunday, Allen had two catches for 19 receiving yards in a 25-10 Chargers win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates of Detroit, Michigan had the old record as he had 955 catches from 2003 to 2018.


3) Commanders head coach Dan Quinn now the defensive co-ordinator too.

With the Commanders losing 44-22 to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has increased his responsibilities. He is now the defensive coordinator too. Joe Whitt Jr. remains with the Commanders, but has his responsibilities diminished. The Commanders have now lost five straight games and are at 3-7 this season.



2) Giants make coaching change.

Staying with the NFC East, the New York Giants have made a coaching change. Gone is Canadian Brian Daboll of Welland, Ontario, and in is Mike Kafka of Chicago, Illinois. Kafka was the Giants assistant head coach and offence coordinator. New York is last in the NFC East at two wins and eight losses.


1) Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue dies at age 84.

Tagliabue of Jersey City, New Jersey was the NFL Commissioner from 1989 to 2006. During his time as commissioner, the NFL expanded to Jacksonville and Carolina. Meanwhile, the cities of Cleveland and Houston got expansion franchises too after the Browns moved to Baltimore and the Oilers moved to Tennessee. Tagliabue died of heart failure and complications with Parkinson’s disease.
