TOM KITTEN TOYS WITH RIVALS

JAMES Cummings won’t back up Spring Champions Stakes winner Tom Kitten in the Victoria Derby but he already has his eyes set on the 2024 Cox Plate.

Cummings said a start in the 2023 Cox Plate would not have been out of place for Tom Kitten on the back of that win.

He’s happy to wait though for next year saying Tom Kitten still had improvement to come.

“If we can keep getting him better and better then in 12 months’ time he might be racing on the same day down in Melbourne,” Cummings said after Tom Kitten’s easy win.

“He’s just kept improving, he’s been training so solidly at Osborne Park. I thought he was capable of that yes, and he’s proved to be one of the best middle-distance horses in the country today.”

Cummings was in raptures after Tom Kitten’s runaway victory which was almost by four lengths.

“Outstanding. The horse’s misfortunes have been immeasurable these past three starts. It’s just fantastic that he was able to get into the clear when he found himself in the best race of the prep and he was able to show just how good he is,” Cummings said.

Tom Kitten’s jockey Adem Hyeronimus said he was unbelievable and it won’t be his last Group 1 win.
