Australian boxing superstar Tim Tszyu is set to find out whether he will become the mandatory challenger for Brian Castaño’s WBO super welterweight title.
The 26-year-old is coming off a dominant third-round technical knockout victory over Steve Spark in July after Michael Zerafa pulled out at the start of fight week.
With plenty of options, Tszyu has a long list of names ready to take the fight but earning a title shot is the boxer’s sole focus.
According to Ben Damon from Fox Sports, he told Alissa Smith that Tszyu could know his fate at any point in the coming days.
“[Tszyu’s team] is trying to get the WBO to say yes Tim Tszyu is the mandatory challenger to Brian Castano,” he said.
“There have been letters back and forth as to why Tszyu deserves to be in that position, he is the number one challenger but he needs to be announced as the mandatory. And that’s what they’ve been looking to do.
“Now they WBO are just weighing up the arguments and they’re set to make their decision any day now, so Tim Tszyu will know exactly what’s in store for his boxing future.”
The news is music to the ears of Tszyu’s supporters. Many have believed he deserved the right for a world title challenge several fights ago but the Aussie boxer was determined to earn his place.
While the decision is yet to be announced it would be surprising to see the WBO decide against Tszyu’s promoters – No Limit’s requests.
