Three-way tie for the lead after first round of the 2020 Masters

The first round is now complete at the 2020 Masters. After 18 holes, there is a three-way tie for the lead at -7. On Friday, Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina, and Dylan Frittelli of South Africa joined England’s Paul Casey on top of the leaderboard.

Due to a severe rainstorm on Thursday, Masters organizers could not finish the first round in the scheduled time. So many players who started their first round on Thursday needed to finish on Friday before going on the course immediately thereafter for round two.

So far, the Augusta National Golf Course has simply been very easy. That is not overly shocking however when you consider the fact that the greens tend to get quite soft after heavy rain. Of the 92 players in the field, a total of 53 golfers were under par after the first round. Organizers will hope the tournament gets tougher as the event motors along.

There were two players at -6, and one back of the leaders. There you found American Justin Thomas and South Korea’s Sung-jae Im. At -5, were Australia’s Cameron Smith, Americans Webb Simpson and Xander Scauffele, and England’s Justin Rose.

A large group of meanwhile is at -4. Those three back of Frittelli, Casey, and Johnson are  Mexico’s Abraham Ancer, Germany’s Bernhard Langer, Americans Tiger Woods, Cameron Champ, Patrick Reed, England’s Lee Westwood, South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen, and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama.

Johnson is the only leader that has won a major before. The world number one was victorious at the 2016 U.S. Open from the Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh.
